Buy the best you can afford. How much welding you gonna do? If its a one off try borrowing a hand held one. I find my flip up mask a pain as you are wasting time lifting it up and down then it slips off my head(usually wear on old beanie hat when welding). If I had the spare cash I would go for the auto type mask. I prefer my hand held one.
 
i have a speedglass 9100xx (the one with the bigger screen) not cheap but worth every penny. i had a cheap auto mask before and it was a wast of time.
 
i got one of them 30 quid autos off ebay - before that i had a flip down machine mart one ....

its like night and day literally - maybe a good flip down would be different but the 30 quid auto made a huge difference to my welding - all be it ive ony been welding for a month or so.

i do have a hand held as well though as above in tight spaces the auto doesnt always fit -got it free with my welder - was handy today repairing a wheel arch on a trailer.

if my auto broke or i thought it wasnt working well - id be away buying a good quality tomorrow .... i aint an old salt so anything that makes it easier for me is a godsend.

just my experiance - but as i said above - only been welding a month so take with a pinch of salt !
 
I have 2 I use. Both are industrial from an engineering company so they're top quality. One is had held and the other is an auto dimming one. I mainly use the dimming one but I always end up taking it off anyway. I'd say for a learner use a dimming one so you have both hands free. My dimming one is top notch and it goes from literally like a window to pitch black instantly.
 
i hope it does otherwise its going back ,,,, aparantly its just some scratch on the headset... yep the hard bit learning how to use the ficking thing

get some decent scrap to work on

biggest factor for me has been prep work , welding seems to be 85% prep/fabricating 15% welding skill ....

cut it , shape it , flapper wheel/grind the edge of both sides of the joint.

the actual welding was caker compared to all that ! - first job i did my prep work was pish because i wanted it done and light was fading - and id cut the floor out my landy ;) - end result was i ended up redoing it the next day propper

yesterday i spent more time prepping the metal with the grinder , getting rid of old weld , and clamping it up good and propper
