heyup guys
would like your thoughts, experience etc on welding masks, never welded before but bought a welder (think they should come as standard on all landies) - i dont like the idea of these hand held ones as think i will need both hands free - i dont know what i am looking at so would appreciate comments, suggestions etc
 
you can't go wrong with a speedglas one...you get what you pay for though... a £140 auto dimming helmet with be much better than a £25 normal helmet
 
yeah had a look there, but again i dont know what i am looking for - the price differences are quiet different, is it a case of you get what you pay for and buy the best you can afford???
 
ive bought expensive snap on and others .none of them lasted at the moment iam using a cheap one and it works a treat ,you do really need auto one
 
Hand held one's do come in handy when you got your head somewhere a mask dont fit, i use both all the time, neither are expencive, so one of each me thinks for you
 
My welds were once summed up as "wouldn't hold small coal" this all changed when I went to an auto darkening mask.
My welding improved 10 fold. I can now control a full length rod when arcing as I can use my now free hand to steady the rod.

I just purchased a cheap mask from ebay, valley trade mark, works fine.

get the best you can possibly afford, you only get one pair of eyes, i used to weld for a living, auto masks are great, but i suspect that the cheaper ones dont dim as quickly as good ones do. you still shouldnt get a full blown flash, but many small flashes of intence uv cant be good. sometimes in confined spaces the sensor is hidden from the arc but your eyes arent, so you strike and the mask doesent darken, so make sure its dark enough to protect you in that case.
 
ive used a hand held mask with a bit of dark glass in it arc welding for over 30 years ... dont understand people who say they cant weld using one.... ive never seen the need to try a fancy self darkening one...
 
Yeah it's fine for mig, there's a sticker inside it that tells you what to set the darkening levels to depending on what amps your set at etc for mig, arc etc
 
i really must learn to read the small (or not so small) print.... and not just stop at the first thing that doesnt agree...... ordering one tomorrow key
 
I have hand held and the helmet type and have no problems using either one I did think about getting the auto darkening ones but whats the point when I can weld without any problems.If you cant make your mind up let me know by PM and next weekend you can come up and try mine with both the mig and arc welder sunday being the better day.
