I am looking for some advice on a potential purchase. My mate has a 54 plate Freelander HSE TD4 I might be interested in. He thinks last owner ran it with too much oil, and it now needs a turbo, intercooler and all pipes flushed. It runs, but only just (I havn't heard it running yet). The two options I might have are buy it as is and repair myself. Or he repairs and prices accordingly. No figures discussed as yet, but I think he paid approx £1k as is.

Whats yer thoughts, as I know bugger all bout Freelanders.

personally I would use the cheap purchase and upgrade the intercooler etc with the alisport stuff. xtra bhp. depends really if you really wants or needs the Freelander commercial, although for that price a decent disco with little more space and cheaper parts.

Cheers mate. Got a Disco and a Fender though. The thing is, I've got an old Ford Galaxy thats reachin the end of the road, but have to admit, its been a great workhorse. Loads of room with the seats out etc and not to bad on the doozle. I think this Freelander thing is thinkin wae my heart instead of ma head. But I do think if its fixable I could be gettin a bargain.

i think what meego is trying to say it will not have been filled with too much oil it is more likely the case of the turbo going and filling the intercooler as well as the exhaust with oil

Could also be a blocked crankcase breather which pressurises the crankcase. Oil in the intercooler and pipe work is normal, too much is not.

Hi mate, depends on how much of a risk your prepared to take,
I used to buy lots of turbo diesels with blown turbo's and clean out the pipes and intercooler and replace the turbo and sell them on. The problem is you won't know the extent of the damage to the engine until you have repaired it. If the car is running rough I would be worried.

for example I had a few VW passat tdi's from the late 90's that had run on the engine oil, turbo seals go, engine oil is sucked through the intake system and engine revs its nuts of until it lets go when all the oil is consumed or you manage to stall the engine. Now these old passats where strong and often you could chuck a new turbo on and they would be fine. Other marques of diesel don't fare so well, a few hundred in parts to replace the turbo and the car may still run terrible or smoke as internal damage was done when the turbo blew, this has happened to me and you end up having to replace the engine as you have already spend so much on the car.

If you can get the freelander cheap enough to factor in a possible second hand engine if needed then it's worth doing your self. If not get the guy to do the work, factor in any possible un-seen engine damage in what you pay and keep your fingers crossed.......or walk away and thank god for a lucky escape

Didnt realise you already had other landies! Why buy a Freelander? Project or a money making project. You could always break it and get cash if you have the room etc.

Crankcase filter defintely the culprit, had the same issue on mine, replaced with BMW part, straight swap, then clean up, good as new!! While your doing the clean up, do the inlet manifold too and EGR blanking too save on the crap going in again. Once its done you'll have a cracking comfy, warm, and sealed greenlaner. Or nice run about with about 35-40 mpg depending on weight of your boots!!

Thanks All.....I am now armed with a wee bit more info than I had before. If i get it cheap enough I may consider it, but three 4x4's in the drive would be a bit daft.

For 1 grand, depending on miles and condition etc it is worth over £5k easily.

Does it have a full service history or just a guy topping up the oil when he could be arsed to check.

New hoses are £120 max for silicone ones, blank the EGR, £40, fit the BMW vortex upgrade to do away with the crank case filter, £23 or so.

New intercooler, depends really. Imo i would go for an uprated one and fit a remap to it as well. New turbo can be bought from a tuner like twisted performance, td5 alive etc.

You need to know if it actually runs first of all and then take it from there as it may have ran on the oil and ****ed the crankshaft bearings etc. We can't answer the question fully without having all the info present. Go ask and come back and we can take it from there.

Till then, it's all guesswork.
