HI All, I bought a Freelander TD4 Auto on a 53 plate, to tow my horse box, yet i find it under-powered, the couple of times i have used it, so now I'm looking at P38 td manual, with only 66k on the clock or a 53 plate disco td5, any advice will greatly appreciated.

Are you sure there isn't a problem with your Freelander?
When my wife had a TD4 I used it to pull a boat an trailer and really didn't find much difference to using the Discovery TD5.

Go for the disco better power to weight .

Hi, biggeee & tacr2man, I have had a new garrett turbo fitted and I have since had the pressures tested. It feels under-powered when pulling, it keeps changing down, then back up the gears, is your Freelander a manual or auto?
Thanks for the advice on, power to weight ratio.

mine is a TD4 auto , but dont use for towing . and the P38 doesnt have a tow bar either.

Wife's was a manual.

We used a Td4 for towing a horse box, it's fine for A roads and motorways but struggles on hill starts and B roads.

I would go for the discovery, the major bonus is you have low range and diff lock if you end up in a muddy field or needing to do a hill start out of some of these tricky equestrian centres.

I use my 2003 Disco to tow a caravan, have towed it to the South of France on several occasions and except for a pipe connector to the automatic gear box radiator coming adrift and dropping all the fluid on a toll road it has been an excellent tow car. Good luck!
