Hullo,

New here, my 1998 300tdi 90 should be pictured somewhere round here as my profile pic. I'm currently in Livingstone, Zambia having driven from Cape town over the last few weeks. The profile pic is from the Richstersveld on the S.A. Namibia border.

Background to my question is; My engine has always run hot but the average temp has been >30C each day. The aftermarket A/C tends to cut out each day around 3pm on long runs.

Today the engine even after 2 hours+ of not being used was still hot so when I checked I noticed the auxilary belt was missing.

Questions; How hard is it to replace? (There's Southern Zambia's only Landy specialist 300m's away which is convenient!)

What are the three wheels the aux belt drives?

Main serpintine belt runs round the crank pully, over the fan, under the tensioner, the water pump then the alternator, then the steering pump, then back to the crank pulley.

For the aux drive i.e. aircon and it would go via the crank pulley, up to an idler, then past the tensioner, round the aircon, past the fan pulley and back to the crank pulley.

Hope this is what you needed to know.

If the belt has snapped then its probably the one that runs your water pump - your engine is probably overheated - check the coolant and make sure its all still there and that your head hasn't warped with the heat.

Did the alternator light not come on? Also, do you have the viscous fan fitted, or did the AC need this removed?

Got some pics? The aftermarket AC may mean that the belt takes different routes to normal, so pictures would make advise easiest.

Hasn't been running hot but hasn't been cooling down and coolant is still there. I think luckily I spotted it after only 20k's or so. Off to see Landy man now.

It runs as Discomania suggested. The belt broke around 100m from a seriously good Landrover specialist who in an hour removed, drained and replaced the radiator. Replaced the broken belt - not in that order obviously. He's also removed the thermostat which is what a lot of Southern African owners have done to keep it running cool. Should be fine back to Cape Town through Zim, Chobe and Kalahari he reckons.

Its 6 weeks worth of make up for my girlfriend. Where is West Sussex are you from? I'm from Chi originally.
