Hi there, my abs pump is starting to make a noise when i brake , is there a repair kit for it or would i have to get another one ??????

If it operates every time you press the brake pedal, the accumulator may be the problem.

I may have this problem. However, it seems to have started after I had some brake work done by a local garage for the MOT. I wonder if this could be caused by not following the correct bleeding procedure?

Not really a problem it should operate on every brake pedal press. About 2/3 seconds. Problem occurs when your constantly on the brake or on/off as this can heat the relay causing it to stick.

Depends what brake work you had done?

If in doubt have someone trusted bleed them, but it's easy enough to do yourself with the right equipment. Have some spare bleed nipples handy though for the calipers as corroded ones can easily stick and round (they're a specific imperial size to if I remember). If there is air in the system the pump will run for longer on each application as air can be compressed more than fluid. If the fluid hasn't been changed for a while it's a good idea to get it done.

Thanks for the answer autofabrique. The brakes are working fine it is just that I have noticed this buzz more since the local garage replaced corroded brake pipes for the MOT. He is not very au fait with later vehicles, preferring non-computer, 'proper' Land Rovers. I did give him the print out from RAVE but I am pretty sure he didn't use it as it was still in the box with the untouched 5litre can of DT4.
I have a Bleedmaster and ramps etc so I will likely re-bleed it myself once I get some replacement bleed nipples.
Anyway, thanks again for your input.
best regards
Bill

Can I just ask, is it normal for the ABS pump to operate for a couple of seconds after each press of the brake pedal.

Mine does and I thought maybe the accumulator needs replacing, but now I'm reading here and a few other threads it's normal.

Whats the best advice?

It not a bad idea to replace the accumulator if it hasn't been done before.

It should be around 2/3 seconds on brake pedal press however if you press and let go and press again it may not operate as the pressure is still sufficient from the last charge.

If the accumulator is good and there is no air in the system the pump does not operate on every press of the brake pedal, at least mine does not since I replaced the accumulator.

Morning Keith, I timed mine this morning according to a comment by wammers in a previous thread and it is inside the time limit for first time start in the morning. I have also been taking notice of whether the pump operates on 'every' press of the brake and it does not. However, I still feel it is operating more often since the brake work was done for the MOT. Your statement about air in the system would likely point to the possibility that the system was not bled properly at that point. I think that might be my next move, although I dont think it is urgent.

I want to change the fluid in mine but not sure from RAVE about the exact proceedure, there seems to be 3 nipples on the brake modulator, my copy of RAVE does not identify which one is which. Have to do some searching when the time comes I guess.:) Brake fluid is bloody expensive over here:(

Questioned the local garage concerned regarding bleeding and he readily admitted he had not bled the booster at all :scratching_chin:, didn't evan know there are bleed screws on there
Looks like I am going to have to DIY. don't you just hate it when you pay someone to do a job then you have to turn around and do it again!

I do most of the work myself (should have done this time ) I only take it to a garage when I don't have the kit to do it, eg a press to do the radius arm bushes.
Anyway, failed the MOT on brake pipes and radius arm bushes, so I bought the stuff, put in the back of the car and took back for my local garage to do the radius arm bushes but he found the brake pipes etc in the boot and before I knew it he had started stripping them out. In fairness he did get it through the MOT and his charges are very reasonable but when you have to re-do the job it ain't quite so reasonable.
Anyway, looks like I will need to re-bleed the brakes.
