Hi redrocky,
the sensors move away from the castleated ring making the ABS system think one wheel, (or more), has stopped turning, which causes the light to come on.
The short term solution is to use a blunt instrument and a hammer to put them back in position again, there's 2 on the front and 2 on the rear.
The fixit solution requires new sensor spring's and seal's, (front), and a strip down of the front and rear hub's. The front also requires the removal of a short piece of brake pipe before you can access the 2 bolts for the sensor.
A bit long winded, but I hope it's helped

I stumbled across this forum and I joined it because I noticed you guys have some cool stuff and definitely I could use your experience. I recently acquired a 1998 Discovery 1 V8i. The ABS light is always on and the brakes work very fine. Some times when the ABS light is off, then I have problems braking and I feel the brakes jamming. Usually in such cases, I stop the car and start again and the light comes on- then am ok!
Is this normal operation?? Is everything ok?? From the last service, the mechanic told me my brakes were fine...

What cars have you driven where it's "normal" for the brakes to lock on?? Your driving a 2ton vehicle around and you know that the brakes are defective, and you haven't had it looked at or taken it off the road until it's been fixed. All I can say is you need psychiatric help

This actually makes me very angry..... I have done 3 services and in every instance the mechanic has told me the brakes are fine.
It is my first time to drive a big car and I asked him after I saw the light on.... and his response every time was that all was fine...

ABS light says different.
Land Rover ABS problems are common and can be a real test of patience to resolve. I am fairly sure an ABS warning light that doesn't go out is an MOT failure so you will need to get it sorted.
Trust me on this, I have had ABS warning light problems on my RRC and so far I have replaced all the brake pipes, the ABS booster valve, checked all the wiring and relays and so the list goes on. Mine is working fine now, the light comes on at start up then goes out when you get moving - just as it should. When provoked, the ABS cuts in and the pedal pulses. You have to remember the ABS is tuned to work off road as well as on and anything less than 100% operation could be an accident waiting to happen.
If there is an underlying problem I can't stress enough how important it is to get it identified and fixed.
