Evening all... hope you had a good Christmas.

Just a quick question about me brakes.

I have recently replaced one of the brake pipes, front to rear (pipe burst on the way home from work :( ).

I have bled the system as described in the manual. All is reasonably well... not as good as they were, am struggling to get a good brake on the front drivers side. A new calliper is on it's way (one piston seized) so a re-bleed is on the cards anyway.
To the question, when the system is fully pressurised 3 pumps of the brake peddle starts the pump, is this normal and how many do you get ?
I have no other experience of classic brakes to compare with... so it would be good to now if this is normal or not before I decide that mine is knackered !!

Yes I think that is about right 3-4 pushes.
It should run for up to 20-30 seconds on the first operation
and just a few seconds if it has been run recently

The pump runs for the right amount of time and as you say for only a few seconds when at pressure.
 
I have also done a system bleed after replacing pipes, and my ABS pump seems to run after two pedal presses. The manual says rebleed in this case , but my brakes are working fine , and I also did an emergency stop the day after I bled it , and it stopped perfectly. So, should I leave as is ?

If it has an accumulator like the P38, it probably needs replacing.
 
Could be, only I hadn't noticed it like that before I carried out the work on the brakes.Maybe I am more conscious of it now and it was like that before.Cheers.

Have ordered a new front OS calliper, so will be re bleeding the system again when its been fitted. At the moment it pulls to the left !

I now what you mean when you say that it may have always been like that, mine has always had good brakes, but I couldn't tell you how many peddle pushes I got before the pump started ? hence the question in the OP.

It's a nitrogen filled sphere with a membrane between the gas and the brake fluid, it stores pressure from the pump. The membrane fails with age and the gas leaks into the fluid and so it no longer stores pressure.
 
I see, thanks for the explanation. When I get the calliper fitted and re bled and the brakes are still ****e, I'll look at replacing it !
 
Received my new calliper today from Rimmers :D
Ordered it on Monday arrived 2 o'clock today ! Considering we've had New Years in between I thought that was good service.
Will bolt it on at the weekend and see how we get on with these bloody brakes then !!
 
i had a break line bust a few years ago..had a hell of a time bleeding them... when the break fluid drained from the resavor it filled the abs pump line with gunk...cant huirt to check...

Have got some workshop time on Sunday so will be back on the brakes then.
Once the new calliper is fitted I'll have another bleed up then we'll see where we are... Didn't loose all the fluid but it was well below minimum, so I will check the pipework, thanks.
 
I jacked up the whole car onto axle stands and removed all the wheels to assist with access to the bleed nipples.

Will be working with the aid of a pit... its for commercials so a bit on the shallow side, but better than crawling about on the floor :)
