Hi all,
First time I have logged on here, and in desperation, I ask for your help please.

I am having huge problems with my 300TDI Def 90, 97 year, Dipped headlights.

Basically, everytime I put on the sidelights, she goes straight to dipped. and when i switch the stalk to dipped, the dipped lights then go out leaving just the sidelights on.

If I remove the fusebox head Lamps yelow relay, the dipped beam stays on even when the stalk is moved to the middle side light position.

I have run earths from both headlights to the chassis, and i actually thought i'd cracked the problem, but the problem has come back, and it is intermitent - sometimes the dipped fails as for the above, other times it works fine. very very strange.

We love our 'Pretty Boy' landy, but are really at witts end with this problem, can anyone help at all.

if it has a dim dip unit like mine-sounds like it's gone
(the legislation has been removed meaning you can bypass the junk and save £84)
if you undo the four screws that hold dash clocks in-pull dash clocks squarely out(or you risk breaking speedo cable.)

hand in-gently squeeze the plastic speedo cable as close to speedo as possible-should release.

thanks fanatic, i have just been out with my young son, and eased out the dash, but can't immediately find the relay.
The is a Yellow Relay within the main fuse box at the gear stick area - it wouldn't be there by any chance - mind you that also serves the fog light too. best we go back out again and find what you mean. where exactly is it?

hi again, we found two relay untis behind the dash, and pulled out the first large pink one - and a samll brown one - for a few seconds the lights were perfect at dipped. now with the small brown realy out, the lights are back to their non working standard - the small brown relay look shot away. not sure what to do now as with it out, still have the problem.
 
Thanks again, yes we found it okay. and pulled it out. But now we have no dipped working at all with it out. This problem gets stranger by the minute????

The other relay, which we put back in for now shows the following ID on it:
SIEMENS V23134-M52-X186 AMR 1088 Any idea what realy that one is as it is really shot away and rusty looking.

What do you reckon we should do now with 'Prettyboy's' Dipped head lamp problems?? - ooogh err - really got us this one.

As for the dim dip relay it works by running dipped beam through resistor pack for dim or dipped beam normal and no resistor pack.

Provided the light switches are okay- either replace the dim dip relay or bypass it

) Now the lights don't work at all

5) join the 2 blue and red striped wires together at the dip-dip unit socket.

Now it just works, and no more stupid dim-dip

6) You can now drive round on just the sidelights.


For test purposes, simply remove the dim dip and join the blue/ red wires at the socket. Most likely it is the switch on the column though.

What do you suppose is the problem now that the DIM/DI[P realy is out, and only the side, and full beam lights work. The dipped does not now work at all. any ideas on how to solve the problem. when you say 'by-pass the relay' what do you mean, and will that solve the problem do you think. I swung through the switch with my multimeter and it indicates the switch is ok. Again i checked all fuses too.

Providing you have the same coloured wires then linking it out will give
Side lights
Side lights and dipped beam
Sidelights and main beam.

So you won't have the issue of dim dip ever again and can legally remove it:D

Sorry but competent in most tasks, thick here on electrics, if you don't mind spelling out how to do the linkin bit - as basically, so far of course i have removed the relay to find no lights on dipped. can you talk me through 'the linking process mate' - your dedcation to helping us out is so great - we cannot thank you enough - what a guy you are!

After pulling dim dip relay-your left with an empty socket

join the 2 blue and red striped wires together at the dip-dip unit socket-with a couple of wire links firmly pushed in-turn on try it and if it all works okay then.

Turn off and cut and join the wires-solder them is best or crimp connectors.
(don't use scotch locks -because they are useless)

Since I could not reach you last night - was getting late - i read back through your last post and simply joined the two red 7 blues, hey presto - it works 'Pretty-boy' now has lights working again, asnd guess what - in all that I have no doubt LR would have charged us a pretty penny to fix - they were looking at £700 - £900 Plus VAT @ £90/hr, plus a new realy, could very well have been over £1000 to find the fault. plus I had a simultaneous earth on my head lamps and nearside rear idicator - the recent bad weather played havoc, so it was not easy at first sussing out multiple electrical probs all at once - but Mate you've been our kinght in shining armour.Thanks again. We're off to re-stow the tools and take 'Pretty-boy' for a run.

Hi have read this thread with interest. I have a lighting problem. When I turn the headlights on the rhs dipped beam does not work , the indicators do not work, and the rear rhs indicator stays on permanently. With the headlights off the indicators work okay. I intend to try and bypass the relay. What did you do to fix the simultaneous earth for the headlamps and rear indicator?
 
Religiously clean all earths on bulkhead, the multi bullet connnectors are garbage and all contacts on lights.
Dim dip can be thrown away as no longer required trash

I too have been reading this post at great length and I too would like to ask for some advice, if I may?

So I’m doing a complete rewire and would prefer not to install this from the start, can you please confirm on this diagram if I can do away with what I have marked up? Also where would you make your connections?

I could obviously have got this wrong as I’m a complete novice with electrics!

I would also just like to take this opportunity to pay Mystery some recognition for constructing that wiring diagram..... absolute LEGEND!!!
