Hi

I am a total newbie about RR but love them, bought a 2nd hand 1995 P38 4.6 HSE here in Japan with 80,000 Km and I have a few maintenance question since I already have spend quite a lot to fix some stuff I want to make sure that I am maintaining it well to avoid additional cost.

So far I am schedule to change the transmission oil and filter, since it seems that it was never been done before, hope it's not too late.

Now the question I have is regarding front and rear axle oils and transfer case oil.

How can we check these oils and why my dealer tell me that I do not have to care about them?

I assume that the previous owner (the car was only owned by one preson before) did the correct 3 year maintenance program (Japanese people are rather good when it comes to maintaining their cars), but just in case I want to make sure that things are OK, and according to the manual I am not schedule to change these oils before 90,000 miles or 144,000 Km

Anyway any help and advise is welcome. Cheers

There's two plugs on each, drain and filler, 1/2" ratchet fits strait on, open the filler/top one first, oil should be level i.e just dripping out - changing the oil is quite easy but little tricky to fill due to filler hole location, oil cans often comes with spout making it easier or use little pump or like, i used garden hose-small funnel and gravity to fill transfer case.(diffs. easier) Check the breather pipes are clear now you're at the diffs. A bit grease in the axle & U/J's doesn't harm either. (need gun for the nipples)

Thanks will check this matter and get back to you if comes with questions. As for the Workshop manual, I already have it on my iPad ;-)

I now change the oil in the axel every year just before winter . Done it twice on one of the cars and once the other. Might be overkill but the stuff that comes out looks like it needed to come out.:D

If it is like that then you have a problem I think, unless your doing a shed load of miles

The first time I changed the oil in my '97 it was full of water and very dirty. Guess it had not been done for a while if ever. The second time the oil looked ok but clearly it had picked up some of the gunk left over from previous change. Don't think there are any underlying problems. :p
