Hi, got an early 90 (1985) with the 2.25 petrol engine in it, apparently they only used this engine for a short while and I'm lucky enough (???!!!) to have one. I would like to convert it to a 300tdi. I have the donor Disco but have read conflicting stories about whether the engine mounts are in the correct place to take the 300 engine. Anybody know?
Also has anybody done this conversion before and have any useful
pointers or websites worth visiting?

the engine mounts i believe will be different to the 2.25 petrol also the disco 300 will be different to the defender 300 (i think) so it may complicate things a bit....im not sure. please feel free to correct me if i am wrong!

Hi all,

You will have to remove the 4 cylinder mounts and weld in place the 300 mounts. From memory its only the 200 tdi engine which differs from defender and discovery. all 300 units are the same?

Daz, What gearbox are you planning to run with your 300? if your going to use the discovery R380 you will need to change the tunnel and floor pans and the gear stick will be in the wrong place. ends up coming through the middle seat.

Personally I would fit a defender 200 unit (or modify a disco 200) as this would bolt straight onto your existing gearbox and the engine mounts are already in the right place. easy conversion.

Thanks for the replies. I will hopefully be mating the 300tdi up to my existing gearbox (LT77). Once the tranpslant is complete I will be breaking the Disco if anyone requires any spares.

The 300 will go on the lt77 but it's a faggot of a job. Also I don't think you can get all the bellhousing bolts in If you live near Bristol there is one in my mates workshop you would be welcome to look at.

ive got some defender 300 engine to chassis mounts if you need some.
tenner plus p+p. i cut them off my chassis to put other mounts in.

The engine is first class. Looking to remove it in the next month, will give you a call when I've done so.

This is amazin!

I got an old 90 that just exploded it was a 2.5 normally asthmatic and wot lump is goin into a 300TDi out of a Disco!

chances of finding a forum on it - i thought 0

I'm thinkin of using the Discos gearbox and fitting remote linkage to put all the waggly bits in the right place will it work???? At least i think it's a Disco gearbox the powerpack came out of a range Rover Classic. This if it works will be the third type of landy the 300 has been in.
