I haven't heard of them but are prefabricated chassis rail centre sections available off the shelf - I can't afford/justify a complete chassis and if these were available they would be a lot handier to fit than doing a complete rebuild.

never seen any but worth asking galv chassis builders

Good idea - I just thought that as long as the two ends of the chassis could be held in place without moving the centre section could be removed and replaced by one piece.

make a template and cut out the sections and make the rails yourself

I was looking for the easier fix - but just as a matter of interest what gauge would you use as it looks like thats what I will have to do.

Got to repair my front dumb irons and going to use 3mm plate to do the repair so I reckon 3mm should be fine
