Hi Guys,
Just registered to this forum so bare with me..

I have a land rover 90 1986,the rear axle is 12 spline and everytime i go off road i keep snapping half shafts, i've been told by friends you can fit a disco rear axle with 24 spline diff and half shafts, just wondered if this is an easyish job to do? i'm not to bad with a spanner as totally stripped it down to chassis and converted into a truck cab. also it has 235/85 special trak tyres incase you wondered?!:)

many thanks and look forward to some advise

chris

your axle is 10 spline, yes fit disco 24 spline axle ,as this most likely will have 3 bolt flange unlike yours ,you can swap flange and fit spacer behind flange ,flange is frc3002 ,spacer is 539745 , bolt flange like later 4 bolt flanges have spacer built in,everything else fits ,but will need most likely to make up rear brake pipes for caliper to t piece each side

Cheers james. thanks for your reply, doesn't sound too much of a hassle then. could be a job for the christmas break, was just getting annoyed snapping halfshafts all the time  lol

If you keep snapping half shafts like that, there's a problem with the nut behind the wheel!
I haven't broken a half shaft in 40 years of driving Land Rovers.

not all the time but any extreme off roading I do i've snapped it, i bought it in jan off a friend with a snapped shaft and now last weekend at a pay n play site snapped it again but within 10months its snapped twice.

lol when your off roading you've got to be aggressive. i think also becasue of the big wheels and tyres plus not alot of weight on the rear end plus 10 spline not being strong is causing the probs

24 splone you will damage more than ur half shafts. Been competitivly doing domps on and off for almost 10 years and I've only ever broken 1 rear half shaft britpart so expected and one front!

err no!

i think also becasue of the big wheels and tyres which are probably unnecessary, but look "cool"?

plus not alot of weight on the rear end plus 10 spline not being strong
24 spline aren't that much stronger

Which P&P - Baldhu? I've been everywhere down there in my 90 with 10 spline axles.

i off road in a group of about 10, my mates with t reg 90's and r reg 90's etc dont seem to break theres?! I agree special trak's are abit extreme but have been great to me off road and got me out some tricky places. i know 24 spline will do more then break half shafts but my mate has just blown a diff after 2 years of hard off roading i can accept thet when you can get a whole axle for 75pounds :)

you dont have big tyres :p:p

iv got 33's (285 75 16) and dont snap half shats

it was interesting to find out that tests done by Ashcrofts show that........
10 spline front axles are actually stronger than 24 spline. In the rear the 24 spline are fractionally stronger.

but you have bust 2 diffs in the past 4 months

but but but :mad::doh:

yes iv done 2 diffs, blow one to bits and stripped the teeth from the other. one front and one rear, and twisted the half shaft at the same time

but i also know why iv broken um :p:p

lol 2 diffs in 4 months, thats good going, i'm confused now. i think i'm going to still do the 24 spline diff updgrade and see how that goes......i'm convinced that 10 spline at the rear is not as strong.:(

it isnt your right and if you bust that ive a 4 pin diff

So defender axles 90 are 10 spine ? I have disco k reg 200tdi. Will that be 24 spline ? I am thinking of scrapping my disco and get defender 2.5 na and use my 200 tdi engine and axles so I am reading this with interest on axles

there's some exceptions, but basically 200's were 10 spline and 300's were 24 spline, both discos and fenders.
