I mite be in the market for a gearbox/transfer box to fit a 2.5 petrol lump in a series 3 motor - if yu have a good "spare" one - please let me know.

nothing definite as yet. still crying:(

my mate has two complete series three gearboxes in storage , the trouble is they both came off six cylinder engines . i'm sure they will fit your engine if you change the bellhousing , but i'm not sure if the gearing is the same . i'll pm you his number .

hmmm! picked up the Dibnah today.
Removed rear halfshafts - Noise still there when in gear.
Removed rear propshaft. Noise seems to have gone, so it looks like rear diff, although there is still a small "grumble" from the gearbox area.
If the transfer box is damaged, will it sound ok when driven in 4wd with the rear prop removed, or is it a replace rear diff and then check again? Obviously I dont want to replace the rear diff and then find the transfer box was the cause, but the removing the halfshafts and prop has hidden the fault. Any way of identifying positively what it is?

Thanks for replies re gearbox, but it looks like that aint the prob - at least so far.

ive got a diff fer an 88 here if yer want it, hurry up tho, its goin down the scrappy in a few weeks

aye its a good un, its still in an axkle complete with half shafts, im only scrapping it cos im having a tidy up and im sick of tripping over it

rite Yella - looks like summat else to get from wales down to here. My back garden is beginning to look like a landy tip at the mo:(

well hurry up cos if yer dint come and fetch it soon its away with the rest of the crap, you could incorperate north wales in yer trip around the british isles ;)

Get one of them mechanics stethoscopes (with a rod on the end) and you will be able to listen at each part and narrow the noise down

so i have to hang on underneath the "truck" wiv a stethoscope, whilst I am driving it and operating a camera underneath at the same time to listen to noises from the transfer box and diff.

I mite be "daft" but I aint fookin stupid:D

thinks! (I do occasionally) - now that rear prop is orf, before i remove rear diff - think i will replace one halfshaft and try turning the diff to see if nasty noise still there. that should check the diff. not sure how i can check t/box at the mo with only front wheel drive. (thinks agin) its like a mondeo hippoo, but betta;)

daft!! if yees got yer rear prop off, stick hand brake on, bung it in 4wd and try ,VERY SLOWLY to move. if yer t/box is ok you shouldn't be able to move ,assuming yer hand brake is working.
if the t/box is shagged then you'll either move no problem or hear weird noises coming from it.
