Hello,

My new (old 1986) 2.5 N/A 90 has guzzled 60 shiney pennies in less than one week - WHaT!!!???

I don't know what's going on here, but this takes the ****. I put 30 quid in on friday, and I've only driven 140 miles, which isn't even a touch on 22mpg. The fuel gauge does do strange things like zero when I brake, and drop when I change gears, but is the bugger likely to drink that ammount of fuel?

I've just put another 30 quid in the tank today, and it's almost 3 quarters full. This doesn't seem right. I don't know whether the thing is guzzling or whether my diesel gauge is nackered. Everything was going so well too :(

Any ideas, or suggestions!?
Thanks in advance for any help

Basically, you don't know how much fuel it has used because the Gauge (HA HA!) is knackered and even if it wasn't it wouldn't tell you much anyway.

About the only way to tell about consumption is to fill the brute to the brim. then drive about for a couple of hundred miles, and go back to the same pump, same side and facing the same way, fill it up to the brim again.

It is POSSIBLE to get down to low twenties if the engine needs a good tuning of the timing. They can go a bit sick without you noticing.

If it is really on the ball you should be getting nearer thirty mpg unless all your motoring is towing big trailers in hilly towns.

cheers CharlesY, I'll look into it. Is the 2.5 N/A economical in the slightest, or is it just a guzzling bastard?

Have a look at the thread in the series forum about 2.5NAs. Charles talks you through timing it - seems to give some top results.

Hi Ashoofack, please could you be a bit more specific? I can't find it anywhere!

Is there any way that i can alter my fuel consumption to get the same peformance, but drink much less juice?

tune your engine.
also , lighten your right foot.
when you drive along , lift your foot off the accelerator pedal slowly , when the vehicle starts to slow hold it there. you would be surprised at how much juice you waste by opening the throttle needlessly.

90 with the Disco transfer box is the same as driving my Disco (now cruises at 70 no problem), but it is quicker on acceleration because of weighing a lot less.

thanks nobber, I've started doing that this afternoon!!!

Stig - what exactly is the transfer box, and how much would it cost me to get a disco transfer box?

I think you should speak to Discomania, who has a Def 90 with the 2.5 N/A engine in it, though his is a Leyland Sherpa variant engine.

He has long term experience of the 2.5 N/A and its fuel guzzling is a lot less guzzly than yours I think.

His pump has been recently cleaned out, and I set the timing spot on, which can make a huge difference.

Your engine is rated at 67 bhp, and you want every last one of them.

i doubt a n/a could drive a disco box , im also thinking a td 19j will struggle with one. stig it is a td and not a tdi?

tis a 2.5td, it has no problem towing my car trailer with a car on (weight of 1.5tons), it feels exactly the same as my 300tdiDisco. It was only the transfer box that was used.

Does the the disco transfer box go straight onto an early 90 gearbox?
