Ive been reading a lot of posts relating to the diff locks etc - im pretty disapointed tbh
I have always thought that a four wheel drive drove all four wheels permanently & the front diff allowed the vehicle to turn !
In theory my disco is only one or two wheel drive & not four at all as when its stuck only one wheel spins - when diff lock is on the opposite wheel also turns
Surely this means its only two wheel drive as its never driving more than two wheels at once. I have done a lot of reading on here ref this - still confused !
I know this has been covered loads but is a disco really a four wheel drive or not ??
Sorry if your bored with explaining these things to us unqualified tryers lol !
cheers
stu

Have a read about diff wind up and you might understand how all this works, you can weld up the diffs if you like but dont try driving it on tarmac because the inside wheels cant spin so would break you diff.

well it is 4wd in that all four wheels have equal torque delivered while grip is even across all wheels ,which makes disco better at handling on the road ,to do this and it needs 3 x diff ,one per axle and one in transfer box ,unfortunately this means you can stand still on slippery ground with one wheel spinning or if center diff locked stand still if one wheel at the back and front spin, there are a few types of 4wd but all have disadvantages and advantages lr 4wd high on road is a good one, some 4wds are only that in low box or dont have center diff and have more positive 4wd but can give issues on rough ground where there isnt enough slip to stop transmission winding up ,or dont use 4wd on road because of wind up ,its a comprimise ,lockers can and are added to landies to give positive 3wd if locker fitted to one axle or 4wd if locker fitted to two,

Done some reading on diff wind up - makes more sense now - cheers lazydog
and thanks to james for taking me seriously and trying to explain you could of used sarcasm and been of no help whatsoever like hoyt !

That must be one of your best posts mate.:clap2:

i bet a good number arent fully sure exactly how it works ,the system lr used does allow equal 4wd on road which is why they used it ,now with traction control its even better

Very helpful and informative reply there. Most the other replies are as much use as mudflaps on a tortoise

Sorry pal i thought it was a wind-up :D

Dr Evil the drive bias on a Freelander is towards the front but will turn all 4 wheels equally when on slippy stuff.
Even if it's cross axled:)
