Yes, they are expensive, but back in 93 when I had changed the head gaskets twice in a week on my 3.9 Vogue and "Slipped liner syndrome-or whatever else it's called was unheard of because LR were keeping it quiet, they were the only people who put me in the picture and I had no reason to doubt their diagnosis. I shelled out £1000 for a short motor-it hurt the wallet bigtime but the problem was sorted. They were most helpful.
2 years ago, I had the same problem with the 4.6. I shopped around and got a new short lump from Autopost which has also been superb.
It's easy to say they are talking crap etc.,etc., but back it up with FACTS not innuendos. The Company has been around for years, supplied the V8's to TVR and I speakas I find.
I can only assume that you have a personal axe to grind with them unless you put some hard evidence on the forum.
NO, I am not connected in any way with RPI, just speaking from my experiences of them.
No axe to grind,I just hate to see quotes posted on the net that have no proper evidence to back them up,granted the 94mm bore V8's suffer loose liners/cracked blocks - often as a result of overheating issues. The point is they were badly made, and there is not enough material to properly support the liners.A stronger engine would tolerate some abuse, but these engines cant take it.Lp RR's cooling systems are often ignored by the time they get into 3rd or 4th ownership - exactly when they need a new rad, hoses, matrix O rings and non leaking LPG vaporisers/pipework.
The bit that really gets me is the weak mixture statement,it simply isnt true, and is easy to monitor,I've done it countless times whilst faultfinding 14CUX,Gems,Motronic or trimming LPG systems.Fit a pair of wide band UEGO's and you will see how untrue it is.
For RPI to insist that chipping a GEMs engine is the only way to prevent a problem is a bit rich,I wonder if they would stand by an engine long term, that they supplied - esp with one of the cooker ring LPG systems they still recommend.
The trouble is they have a load of of plausible stuff on their website that has been there for a long time,so people take it as gospel.I question it and ask others to do so,its not hard and very interesting to examine.
I have never had any contact with RPI,only read their pages on the net,But in running a Land Rover garage for the last 15yrs,specialising in diagnostic work - mostly to the trade, I have seen more dead v8's than I would like to.Alot of them would still be running well with better maintenance and weekly checks.LPG fitters who only use the "Autocalibrate" function to tune them after running out of hours fitting a system have killed alot more - or they would not understand how to do it if they tried.
