I have a very intermittent steering problem (once in every 100 mile or so) when going round a sharp left hand bend at sub 30mph as I turn the wheel it gives a slight tug to the left then wont return normally without me pulling the wheel harder than usual

This is what UI have done so far.

1. Checked fluid levels and OK
2. Check all four ball joints, one very sticky on drag link so replaced both

Problem Still exists but not quite so obvious

3. Removed steering damper checked but not the problem
4. Removed Steering column UJ's all ok

With everything disconnected and disco on axle stands checked both road wheels moving them from side to side and both turned smoothly.

5. With wheels disconnected, damper removed, steering column ujs removed I connected just the nearside wheel to the steering box and bingo, when moving the wheel from side to side it felt very notchy (as if the cogs in the steering box were not meshing correctly), there was also a small stiff area which is what I can feel through the steering wheel when driving. It should be noted however that at this point and with the steering uj's back in the system (nothing else connected) I could not feel this problem when turning the steering wheel but still could when moving the wheel

I assume that all this points to the steering box but as I don’t know anything about swivel joints could this be the problem.

Your advice would be sincerely appreciated, to be honest I am thinking about leaving well alone until things get worse but would live to drive the thing without wondering when its going to happen again.

I'd check the swivels for pitting and freedom of movement and probably also look at the CV joints.

Look in Rave/search the forum, for details of what to check on the swivels and how to replace their bearings and reset them.
