With your mpg, you are never gonna brilliant mpg as its got the aerodynamics of a breeze block, it weighs in at 2.4 tons and is auto. However maybe a good service, makesure that none of the brakes, including the handbrake isn't sticking. Also check tyre pressures. Lastly has it been de-egr'd and de-catted. Have done both to mine and has made a difference to both power and mpg. Lastly removing the viscus fan can some times help.
Doors
there is a known issue with the springs in the door locks. You can buy new one on ebay for a couple of pounds.
Hope this helps you in some way
Quozzi, dont take it hard mate, people who have been on here a long time get bored of answering the same questions in depths over and over again. You will feel the same in a year or two mate.
17mpg is pretty close to V8 consumption. Even for an auto you should be getting mid 20's. As mentioned above, good service and if its still bad, start looking deeper.
And by the way, if you're going to take the fan off, keep it in the car. Combination of traffic jam, hot day and towing a heavy boat up a steep hill nearly cooked mine. If you've got it in the car (with the spanner) you can always put it back on if necessary.
i run mine on used cooking oil i dont mess about purifing it i just run it through a pair of tites and chuck it in the tank and its legal 20 litres of cooking oil to 2 litres of petrol so i dont have to worry about mpg coz its free u mite want to try it oh it smells nicer than diesel too
