Sorry Redhand, I'm not familiar with the costs of fuel in your part of the world, but if it's more expensive then there would have been less gallons therefore more mpg.
Round our way it's about 1.25 per litr, so I guess that's about the same price nowadays - rate of exchange, it is £1 for 1euro now isn't it

I'm getting a steady 30mpg out of my 200tdi disco running on svo/derv mix with big mud tyres, viscous fan still in place and driving normally not trying to economise. Hasn't had air or fuel filters changed in a while so might improve slightly when I get round to doing them.

Especially if he's doing Irish miles (6721 feet). Last time I was there there were still a few (very old) signposts that seemed to use the native measure.
Remember your speedo, and therefore your mileage reading, can be up to 10% out. Most of them overread. Check it against a satnav or tachograph. If you have non-standard tyres your mileage reading may be well out. And anyway, the filling station pumps aren't 100% accurate. They are calibrated to give less than the indicated quantity, to allow for wear before the next calibration. Some stations get them calibrated VERY frequently.

Sorry Pastmaster, but I've got to disagree with this lot.
A. Speedo's almost NEVER 10% out, 3-4% as an average over a speed range of 30-100mph;
B. Fuel station pumps are checked regularly by Customs and Excise for accuracy, they will NOT be out.
You paint a picture of this innaccuracy and that one - well yes, life is not perfect.
Most people want to know a comparative fuel consumption mpg, not mpg to three decimal points. They want to know mpg to identify potential problems or indeed benefits of modifications or alternate driving styles. They want to know, in real world terms, what is possible.
I think you are missing the bigger picture here.

but satnav is effectively an average speed over 1 second intervals, so if the sat is out by a few feet in one direction on one second then out a few feet in the other direction the next second it will be inaccurate - and a few feet can be 100 if it ain't locked on to many satellites...but i agree, generally over a long distance the average is very accurate.

OK Biglad, I'm splitting hairs, but then - other posts seem to agree with me about the speedo. The only one I'v ever checked was on a Prius and it was exactly 10% out. The point about fuel delivery is that the pumps do wear and gradually deliver more fuel as a result. My info is that they may therefore be calibrated within a specified tolerance to allow for this. Obviously suppliers prefer to be under-delivering within that tolerance. Anyone with a fuel business want to confirm that or prove me wrong?

Just checked on those fuel pump tolerances. Hampshire trading standards states: There is a programme of inspection of all retail fuel pumps in Hampshire. When officers check equipment they make sure the measures are within legal tolerances (that is between - 0.5% and + 1%) and all adjustable parts are sealed. This protects the public and honest traders from unfair competition. Before commencing to re-fuel ensure all indications are at zero. If you believe a pump you have used is incorrect we would like to hear from you.
OK that's quite a small tolerance, but with fuel stations' tiny margins it could make a difference between profit and loss. If I were ALLOWED to deliver less than full measure I'd do my best to make sure I did so!

Hi there, you don't say how many gallons or what price per litre so I made up some numbers:
£86 worth of diesel @ £1.15 per litre converted to gallons = 16.5 gallons
380 divided by 16.5 = 23 mpg
This has to be the most reliable figure on here 23 mpg YES if I am lucky, OK its de egr'd, straight thru exhaust, 300tdi auto running Kumho kl71 33's and the MPG has been constant since I bought the thing and it was standard.
Figures of 36+ are absolute tripe come on its a 2.5 ton piece of metal shaped like an outhouse powered by an engine that, well lets face it struggles to put out anything above 120bhp, seriously do people get these figures? if so can they provide documented proof if not please get your heads tested...............

On the face of it that sounds quite low by comparison to my own Tdi300 auto. It has been De-EGR'd, viscous fan removed, 205/80/16 road tyres, well maintained but other than that it's standard. I get an average of 33mpg and if I'm on a long steady (60mph) run then a little more.
Most of my mileage is NOT in towns as we live in the country. I would say at least 80% is quiet, steady 'a' road stuff. Don't usually exceed 60 as was told by an aerodynamics engineers that above 60 they really start to come into play.
You pays yer money etc etc I am content to roll steady, others will want to get on a bit more than me.

"In your opinion" figures of 36 mpg are tripe, Girv, in your opinion, but I can assure you that with my wifes Tdi 200 we get 36mpg all day long.
It's driven gently I grant you, it's well maintained with Difflock synth oils in, no viscous fan and regular air filter changes and road tyres.
I wholeheartedly agree with your comments about it being a heavy (2050kgs) vehicle and low power (111bhp), so that's why we don't expect it to perform like an ordinary family car
I must have misunderstood but I thought the purpose of forums was to share information, to the benefit of all - not to be slagged off because one person has different experiences to another.
I feel absolutely no need to prove to anyone else what I know to be true myself, however, IF anyone is interested to understand more of how we get good mileage out of a Disco, then please just ask.

Biglad, my most humble apologies for the tone of my last post! I am constantly trying to improve the MPG on my truck and have done everything that I have read on the posts in here but nothing appears to work on mine! admittedly most of my driving is around town and to and from work but I would have hoped with all the regular servicing filter changes etc etc etc I would be seeing some improvement maybe 1 or 2 mpg more then I would be happy.
I'm open to anymore suggestions for improvements, even driving like morgan freeman in driving miss daisy doesn't help!

Its Auto big man, and to be honest I only ever have a heavy right boot when i need it.........
