Hi everyone, had a squeak from the belt for a couple of weeks, so after researching on here I decided to try the penny trick, so after undoing the stud placing the 1p in the gap I tightened it back up only for it to keep turning so took it all back out took the adjuster off and it turns out all the thread has wore and most of the stud was covered in coiled metal round the thread from the block, my question is do I need a whole new cover or would I be able to helicoil the old hole ?

Others appear to have helicoiled them ok. Try a search after you have been to the aptly named 'Introduce yourself' section

Exactly the same circumstances as my 300 TDi - changed the belt tensioner only to find that the locating stud rotated freely. I was contemplating a helicoil repair and bounced this off a chap I know who owns a garage out in the sticks here in N.Devon - he uses a system which is far superior to Helicoil but I'm darned if I can remember what it's called - if you want I will call him and let you know.

The repair was excellant which cost me £50 but he did come to my house which is a round trip of about 36 miles.
