IF ALL ELSE FAILS SHOOT THEM!
Have just purchased a 95 Tdi Discovery for £800, when the guy started it up it was making an awful screech from the front of the engine which I narrowed down to what I believe is the water pump (Right hand side front as you look at the engine). I've ordered a new pump and got £50 off the price of the motor, I take it it is pretty straightforward to change?
Regards,
Steve

Had a similar noise, replaced the water pump only to find it was the 'fan' belt
tensioner bearing...
See ebay for details.

Most likely cause is fan belt tensioner bearing, approx. £6 from Island 4X4 (find them on e-bay) and approx £9-10 for new belt. If it's not that it's worth changing anyway. A quick check is to squirt WD40 into bearing when engine is running, noise should stop right away, but start again in a few secs.
