Hello All,

Can any one help? My 300 tdi had a total clutch failure, the pedal went totally to the floor, no resistance there what so ever, Managed to get her home with no clutch which was fun!!! I assumed this was hydralic failure so I brought a new master and slave cylinder. I have now fitted these and bleed the system up, the pedal is now solid I'm stuck for ideas. Does any one now how far if any the slave cylinder push rod should protude from its arpeture?

Any suggestions much appreciated,
 
Your clutch fork has gone through
It wears on the pivot check that theres no play on that aswell

Should the rod protude from the arpeture at all, as I have seen an image on the web which shows it an inch or so out, where as mine is about 5mm in, which would explain the fork failure. In rough steps whats the procedure for this change?

I was reading my haynes manual and this states its easier to remove the engine? But seems the landy enthusiasts promote removing the gearbox? Which is easier?

if you have lifting gear it is easier to remove the engine, but be aware there is one bolt at the top of the bellhousing that requires the gearbox to be sloped down by a lot to get at it.
 
I did mine last year and took the engine out .
A few awkward bolts in the top of the bellhousing - I used a few extensions and got them from underneath but they are bloody awkward .
Fairly straightforward - but you have to lift the engine failly high to clear the body (I had to remove one of the front wheels and let the hub almost to the ground to swing the engine clear :D ) .
I also changed the rear crankshaft seal while the engine was out .
If you go the route of removing the box there is a removal cradle advertised on ebay for , I think £36 , which would make the job much easier as the box is a very awkward shape . This cradle bolts on to the box and you can get it with a spigot which will fit into the hole in the trolley jack and makes the box very manageable .
As well as being an awkward shape they are very heavy .
 
Does anyone know of the best clutch to use, AP or genuine LR.......? As why this is out I'd be stupid not to replace it.
 
ive just put an AP in mine, well pleased with the "bite and take up", used disco this wkend to move 3 hosses so it has had a bit of use.
 
good man, took me axle off today, im waitin fer me bushes an bolts from paddocks, should have it up an runnin tomorrow night if the bits arrive
