I've worked my way through 2 300TDi discos and 2 P38a DTs and I've now got to what I've wanted for a long time. It's a '95 RR Classic, 3.9 on LPG. I intend to use her as a daily driver if she proves reliable enough (ambitious??) But I hate the scenario where something goes bang and then everyone says 'oh aye those things are famous for that'. I'm only 25 but this is my 5th LR so I'm not a complete novice, and I'm a panel beater/painter so rust isn't an issue. What else should I look out for. I'm planning to do a full service and flush the cooling system. What else would you lot suggest.

Also, while I've got you here:
The fuel guage for the plg, which consists of 4 green LEDs shows full all the time, I guess its some sort of pressure switch on the tank?
There is no diff lock on the hi/lo knob so I'm guessing its a viscous coupling, like the P38? Any maintenance required? Thanks

Hi mate - 1st of all gd luck! Im 22 in 95 classic as a daily driver. 3.9 on LPG! 104k etc and its awesome!

Ran it since june now and apart frm the autobox giving up the ghost and me fooking it myself! Shes started every morning and got me to where it was meant to. Few quirk with the other bits of kit on board but as a transport tool shes fine!

Presume as its ur 5th landy youve found the RAVE manuals? I asked a similar qu the other day and got told pretty much to follow the maintenance section in the RAVE and from what ive read on here it seems pretty much correct. Keep an eye on the "its a V8 mate" section on here for engine stuff aswell. Frm what i know there is no maintenance on the viscous lock and the LPG guages are as gd as useless so ignore them - get used to the mileage you get on a full tank and go off that! Im currently looking an binning my LPG switch box off n manipulating one of the dash switches and not having a guage!

In terms off service items - LPG also like proper sparks so get some new ignition gear in there and go for the wider HT leads if poss.

Where you based mate?

The LPG level gauge is actually a float in the tank that connects with a sender unit (via magnetism) screwed to the valve on the outside of the tank.

Wires connect the sender to the LPG ECU, they may have come loose? Or you may have a duff sensor (easy replace, try the bay).

Make sure you get the correct one, there are three main types. If you get the wrong one it'll either not work, or it'll read backward (empty to full).

You can change the sender type in the LPG software usually too. But you'll need the software and lead.

I smashed my old sender accidentally and got a new one for £4.99. They never read accurately though, so you may have more important things to spend time and money on!

Thanks, I havent looked at any RAVE manuals, what are they? Im in Larne in northern ireland, you? So far I've flushed the cooling system and replaced the coolant, and also flushed the engine and changed the oil and filter, next payday ill go for spark plugs, cap, arm and new leads. i think im gonna cut the cats open and take all the honeycomb out and weld them back up. She's not anywhere near loud enough!! haha

land rover service factory manual RAVE download land rover resource, service manual, workshop factory manual, download, rave, vehicles including discovery, series, defender, range rover, freelander, LR3, Handbooks, Catalog, Catalogue, Land Rover Inte

follow this link on that page "Land Rover RAVE Service Manual large file warning 590MB"

From what ive understood someone went head to head with LR in a law suit which meant LR needed to publish there workshop manuals hence the above link. Its mega sized cuz it all the LR vehicles upto the RR 405. Well worth a download though and spend a day or so getting to know it. The mechanics is simple enough and the spark bit requires abit of multimeter experience but you should be able to fix or bypass most problems. Its like a really really good haynes manual for free!

LPG needs a hotter spark to fire and the way to do this is decrease the spark plug gap

word of advice..re ignition..buy from land rover dizzy cap, rotor arm etc..
plugs use copper!leads use oe or magnacore..
