Good evening ladies and gentlemen,
I have a Series IIa (1967) that has a 3.5 V8 conversion fitted. Now it was a petrol prior to conversion as far as I can tell but I have no idea if the starter fitted is a 2 1/4 petrol starter or not. I need to change the starter and have been looking at my options. The starters for V8 model land rovers are about half what I can find series starter's for so I'm tempted by one of those but I have noticed that the starter solenoid is on the right hand side of on of the mounting bolt holes whilst on the series it is on the left of the bolt hole. Is this an issue, I'm not near the car through the week so can't jut nip and check to see if there is clearance between the starter and the block to have the solenoid on that side.
Below is a picture of the current starter, I know it's not a great picture but it's the best I have to hand.

Any advice regarding which starters will fit and/or what my current starter is exactly so I can find a like for like replacement will be greatfully received.

Looks like the older Big V8 type. Normally the newer (plastic geared) V8 starters are better for series conversions as the solonoid is on the side and not underslung as the front propshaft on a series is mighty close with the solonoid underslung.

Plastic newer type not good for starting in gear they melt!!
 
From what you've told us, then it should.

However, if you have any identifiers on yours, check with the supplier first on their compatibility finder.

The one you want is a rangerover one,like jai said, as the solenoid is on the side not the bottom. I had the one like you've got with the solenoid at the bottom and the prop kept hitting it and snapping it off! All v8 starters mount the same(I think) but you need to make sure the gear has the same amount of teeth so it meshes with the ring gear ;)
 
Just a quick update, I bought a new starter for a 3.9 V8, fitted it and no issues in that, spins up brilliantly and fires the engine round much quicker than the old starter. The size differece between the old and new starters is huge so there's a big weight difference and as mentione previously the soleoid is now well out of the way of the front prop.

No problem Andy its why were here for!

It's these little bits that make for a good conversion or a **** poor job just throwing an old sd1 lump in doesn't work
