Hello All!!

I'm looking to buy a 3.5ltr V8 Rangie very soon!

The automatic is appealing to me at the moment. I've heard, as its a 4 speed auto, that when cruising on the motorway, it revs alot higher than the manual equivalent.

Is this true?

Also, how reliable are the auto boxes, torque convertors etc? What kind of mileage do you start having problems?

I have an 89 EFi 4 Speed Auto which has done 155,100 miles with no problems the box is as good as a modern one. Don't know where you got you're info on the revs being higher but at 60 miles per hour my Range Rover will be around 2500 ish and at 30 im lucky if it's near 1500rpm ish

The same box was in the Mercedes Benz SE series I had one of those a few years ago which had done over 350,000 with no problems.

If the fluid is changed correctly then the box will last infinately only things which can go wrong are the bands and the breather tubes but this is rare.

Sounds like an auto's ok then! Any ideas on how auto's perfrom eco wise on lpg? Much different to Manuals?

They use the ZF4HP22 on... let's see: BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, Audi V8, Maserati Biturbo, Porsche, Volvo... oh, yes, and on the Range Rover.

You were concerned about the gearbox's performance, you said?

BTW, that's what I have, and I love it. Smooth, reliable, and the 4th gear locks above 2000-2500 RPM, so you basically cruise like with a manual gearbox, without the torque converter slip.

There is one point to know, though: NEVER rev your car on P or D once you have moved the lever to D or R. Repeat NEVER. If you want to do any sort of test, rolling road, exhaust test, or whatever, switch off the engine, wait a minute, and restart it. Then leave the gear lever where it is.

The reason is that once you have engaged the gears, the box is pressurized and you can easily damage it by revving.

My q is Blue smoke on pull away in the morning for about 100 yards on petrol but dosnt smoke on LPG?

Any thoughts Charlotte? or anyone?
