It strikes me that someone must have designed a unit allowing the driver to select 2 or 4wd, some sort of clutch unit that sits in the rear drive train, is there such a thing?
Yes indeed - someone did design that type of thing - back in the 1940s - then over the years they designed and developed something better - permanent 4 wheel drive!
