Anybody out there running tyres in this size instead of the standard 205x80x16 on there Classics? I'm after some new rubber and would be interested to hear the views on how they run. Are there any noticable improvements/drawbacks that anybody has noticed? Or is there no noticable difference at all.

There is quite a bit more choice in the bigger size (although a bit dearer) so just interested to hear if anybody has an opinion. Thanks.

I run 235x85x16 on mine and the only issue I have is that sometimes on full articulation the rear tyres rub on the front of the wheel arches.

Also you may also have to adjust the stops on the front hubs to avoid the tyre walls rubbing on the radius arms on full lock.

Thanks for that. I'm assuming if they were a 70 instead of an 85 that wouldn't pose the same problems:confused:

How are they for comfort, handling and noise?

Correct - 70s are standard so will be ok for arch clearance, but the losk stops will need to be checked / adjusted to allow for the extra width.

Mine are all-terrains and I only do limited mileage so I can't really help with your other questions.

I have 235x70x16 on mine and have no probs apart from needing to adjust lock stop. Might get round to it one day. They are quite knobbly and noisy so i'm expecting to replace with tarmac tyres as they wear out.
I got it with them already on, so don't know how different standard size is.

Cheers. My mud plugging days seem to be getting few and far between these days and even when I do I take the P38, the Classics far too nice for the dirty stuff :D so on road manners are my priority for tyres, especially as the Classics doing a 3K return jaunt to Southern Spain in the summer.

I've got standard size on at the moment and to be honest they run fine. Just thought the 235's might improve the handling without compromising the comfort and there seems to be a fair bit more choice on that size.

:D:DHave a read of this
Range Rover Classic Tire Choices
it may give you some ideas;);).

I've never considered wider tyres on mine as I don't off-road, it must surely increase the load on the PAS(?) & RR 'boxes are prone enough to leaks anyway. The only size option from the factory for the Classic was 215/75x16 so if I ever do change I'll stick to them, always assuming they are still available.

Thanks for all the input. The % of difference is actually more between the 215x75x16 (although negative difference) and the stock 205x80x16 than there is with the 235x70x16 (positive difference) so I think the extra strain would be minimal. For fear of wasting a good few quid I will probably stick with the 205's just to be on the safe side. Or I could take a punt on some cheapies to satisfy my curiosity!!

i had 235/65r16s and they rubbed on full articulation. But apart from that they were fine

235/70 on mine. No problems I'm aware of but I've never had anything else.
Except of course the spare is 205.
Looking for a set of winters now and they need to be 205.

Now I'm confused  I fully understand the meanings of the sidewall marking but negative vs positive difference?

Refers to the diameter. 235/70 is 1cm taller than std, 215/75 is 5cm ish shorter.
(80% of 205cm =164, 70% of 235=164.5 75% of 215=161.25 etc)

Standard 205x80x16

Sidewall size 164mm
Revolutions per mile 697.52
Radius 367.2mm
Speedo showing 70mph, actual 70mph

215x75x16

Sidewall size 161.25
Revolutions per mile 702.78
Radius 364.45
Speedo showing 70mph, actual speed 69.48

235x70x16

Sidewall height 164.5
Revolutions per mile 696.57
Radius 367.7mm
Speedo showing 70mph, actual 70.10

Probably the wrong way of trying to explain using negative and positive, but as you can see the figures are all lower (except revolutions, more because its got a smaller radius) on the 215's and higher on the 235's, but as a % the differences are greater between 205's and 215's, than they are between the 205's and 235's. Hope that makes sence.
