Hi all i got a defender with a disco 200tdi in it and was wondering what the turbo boost pressure is meant to be? Is it safe to up that atall? I've got a spare boost controller lying around and was wondering what was the max pressure i could safely use without upgrading anything.

just read an article where it sez you can safely go up to about 15psi....any more and yer turbo starts to take strain.....dunno mate.....i hate fiddlin with the boost
 
Just a thought probably would never do it anyways. Getting bigger tyres and fitting a disco tramsfer box was worried about the acceleration getting unbearable. Its my daily at the mo. Prob should invest in a set of nice small wheels for road.
 
the def runs at 12psi and the disco at around 15psi, so i guess ya could bump it up a bit, but y not go 4 a bigger intercooler.....makes quite a difference im told
 
i have a TD5 and went the intercooler route....was amazed at the difference all round, specially throttle response and increased power
 
Hmm i also have a big intercooler off a volvo somewhere. Wonder if i could bodge it on somehow? Anyways bigger fish to fry failed mot today. Damn.
 
better going the pump if your looking for a bit more getup and go cheeper than the boost route i did it with my defender and going to put it back and have the pump dun lot cheeper on the derv
 
Betetr leave the pumop alone after cleaning the turbo boost compensator.
Then fit a boost gauge, and SHORTEN the wastegate rod till the full throttle maximum boost hits just over 15 psi / 1 BAR.

The pump will compensate with more fuel, and it will go better.

Your mpg figures may plummet if you drive it hard.

its for a 90 TDI but the ideas the same, Im running approx 16psi judging by how much I altered the wastegate actuator, manafacturer gives 21psi as a max but wouldnt want to risk running that close with no boost guage or exhaust gas monitor.

good advice there. does the same apply to a 300tdi? also is there anyway of telling if a previous owner has allready altered this?

Only by measuring threads, and then it's a bit hit and miss. Really need to use a boost gauge - his Royness is logged in hopefully to fix the gallery bit ;)

Take great care boys!
The best advice you can take is NEVER to increase turbo boost unless you have a gauge fitted FIRST.

If you over-do it there is an increasing risk (as the pressure goes up) of engine damage, and possibly terminal damage.

is this all because yer fitting big wheels and yer worried the gearing might be a tad too high?
simple solution would be not to fit big wheels except for orf roading in which case yer dint need worry about accelleration
