Hi

I have just replaced the cam belt, water pump and thermostat on my 200tdi Disco engined 90 Truck, 1990.

Since then I have noticed that it is running just under the red on the temperature gauge, before it would only read spot on half way on the gauge.

I have bled the coolant system twice now and there is no more bubbles coming in to the expansion tank, is there any specific way to bleed the system, there is a plug on the top of the radiator which I filled up from but nothing on the thermostat housing like some people say to fill up from.

I have just ordered a new radiator so that will be another part to eliminate from the equation.

Any help will be most appreciated.

What brand of thermostat?

Usually advisable to test them in a pan of water before fitting to ensure they are ok.

I fitted britpart stat to my 90 it never opened at all! in the bin and refiitted old one normal service resumed.
It is nice to bleed them, but they arent as fussy as the gaylord 300 engines.

Having just wasted 2 evenings removing and replacing the bottom rad hose (I still have a coolant leak all over the diff), I did this sequence after draining and flushing the rad (as per Hayne's manual and the forums):

Set heater control to max heat
Remove expansion tank cap
Fill rad through top plug
Wait for coolant to move through system
Top up through rad top plug as required
Replace rad plug and expansion tank cap
Go for drive, check heater works
Once cool, check level in expansion tank and replenish if necessary

I believe the system sort of self bleeds as it gets hot, any air locks are forced out into the expansion tank as the pressure increases.

Run it with the radiator fill plug out and it will burp itself.

As mentioned 200tdi is pretty ok with a little bit of air

I will give this a go when I come to bleed it then.

Thank you all for the response and advise.
