Em I'm no expert but you're right that doesn't look correct at all  surely that make would a gasket pointless?

There is no gasket between the valves as this is directly above the cylinder. I agree it doesn't look right but it shouldn't cause an issue with the valves, unless the new cut away increases the sideways pressure on the valves and almost forces them to open?

It could have been done in conjunction with a skim in order to increase the combustion chamber size in lieu of the lost material

Yeah you would usually but thats the only explanation I can think of as to why you'd remove that bit of the head w

Im no big cheese on heads but that looks as if it has weakened the valve seat and may cause it to burn out
Can the recon firm you got it from shed any light and reasure you its ok with a guaranty

you`d need to have taken lots of the face to make your point work Dr..
I spent years machining heads from various motors I raced..
take of lots from a head with a combustion chamber needed pockets cut out of the face of the block so the valves could "breath" properly.
but I believe 200 & 300 pistons have pockets for this ??
(may be wrong)

just had another look at the ad on ebay.. its not a gaylander head ??
or 1 V8 head ??
as it looks like a spark plug hole in the recess between the valves..
yet again, i may be wrong, but it looks like ally not cast steel..

Exactly, my V8 heads have massive pockets in them although remember a derv head is designed for higher compression so it tends to be shaped for this unlike an 8.35:1 petrol engine

But why else would you take a tiny slice out of the head ? When as John says they do different head gaskets depending on what tolerance is on the head as some will come out the factory and need a 3 notch gasket and some will take a single notch just down to the final machining tolerance

It says its a 200tdi so don't know what bit there is confusing you ? But they're all cast ally heads on a cast iron block

Its a glow plug hole and the injector hole, cant remember which one goes where though, think glow plug may be the inner one

never had my head examined yet :hysterically_laughi

so I cant really say...

if I stop giggling, I might think of something

I would say it is to reduce the chance of the head cracking between the valves.

One came up for sale off a 300tdi on eBay with the same missing part in the middle, maybe it was never there depending on casting year ?

I saw on the trailer fitter toolbox videos on youtube he inspects a 200 head with same parts missing.
