You can't just swap the bell housing from a defender box onto a disco one cos the input shaft is toooooo long so would have to be changed too. There are always lt77's on ebay for not much money trouble is you don't know if they're any good till you've put it into the landy. I've got one in the garage along with tranny box that I got free with me 110 dunno if it's any good though.

gear stick location looks pants - the trick when your doing theis is to keep everything in the same position without the need to bodge a cover as you have done - hence that's why peeps just use the disco engine and tbox and keep the GB orginal
 
I dunno, it could be better to drive in. Although, i personally don't have any complaints with the standard layout.

Does this conversion then use the standard def gearbox mounts, with moved engine mounts?

And can you just unbolt the input shaft from one box and put it onto the other, i.e. put the longer bellhousing and input shaft from the disco box onto the def one? Or do you need to take theh bearbox apart to do this?
 
The gear stick is in a better place, i dont give for if its origional or not. Also the discos shorter sticks make it a nicer drive, so you dont have to move the stich 3 feet from 1st to 2nd.

Theres a right way and well, lots of other ways to do it! Reminds me of a man I Knew at the local scrap yard making hybrid 'things' from fords fiestas and vauxhall novas! Top points for something different!

Serously, its got a better, more relaxed feel. Unless of corse your too weak to change gear without the extra leverage. :D

I bought a gearbox a couple a days back that helpfully came with a 110 attached! It's remarkably tidy so if anyone needs any bits let me know. I'm having the wings to swap onto mine but everything else is for sale. Chassis is rotten. It has military door tops that are virtually new. I'll post some pics when I have them.

More pics!

My gearstick is exactly where the old one was! As you can see.

Now I know MHM said it would be a pain in the arse to change the linkages over from the defender gearbox to the disco one. But... They guy who did it for me charged me £500 cash and that included sending the gearbox to his mate to have the linkages changed. So in my opinion it wasnt worth me getting my hands dirty for that kind of money!


All in all im very happy with the job he has done!

looks a tidy job that does - apart from the ermmmmm .......

and a reckon yer tranny brake needs adjusting
 
errrmmm.... what??

That "chimney liner" as you call it, is my snorkel made from stainless flexyhose. Which is the same stuff that the military buy for re-routing exhausts and so on...

Dont knock it!! lol
 
oh right my handbrake... Sorry it is friday!!

I have a xEng disk brake on the sucker!

Works a treat but could do with adjusting a bit now its bedded in.
 
One more thing. Thanks to all you guys who gave me advice about doing this. I know i didnt do the job myself, but atleast you guys gave me an idea about what i was paying someone else to do!!
