Hi im new to this site. can anyone advise what i should do. I have a 2006 land rover discovery 2.7diesel and on saturday morning on the motorway the engine stopped. Called insurance who sent recovery lorry who took it to hurst land rover. They looked over the engine and told me there has been a " catastrophic engine failure" and i need a new engine. They will supply and fit a reconditioned engine for £7400. I have searched web and i can get a few companies in englang mainland that will ship a recon engine to me for £2500+vat or if i getcar to them supply & fit for £3000+vat. Im based in belfast northern ireland. Landrover are telling me its impossible to get a recon engine as cheap as 2.5k. Has anyone any experience of recon engines or ever had to buy one? I think i might have a right to challenge manufacturer on this as to why engine failed on a 6yr old car with 72k miles! Car has full service history but not with landrover. Any help or advice greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I was wondering that as well as cambelt isn't due until either 7 years or 105000 miles

Don't they have two belts (front and back) and they have to be changed at different times? I think one is a body off job.

Engine failure could be caused by many different things. Oil starvation?

I don't like your chances. Even if age and mileage wasn't an issue (and you can bet it will be), then the non-LR service history will be used as a solid excuse to bin any claim or poss goodwill contribution. They will argue that anything could have been done to that engine prior to failure.

Its only the front belt breaking that would stuff the engine, the rear one only drives the fuel pump and isn't timed, body doesn't need to come off on a D3 but the back one is a t*at to do.
