Hi ive had a conversion frm 19j to 200tdi and my heater wasnt getting very warm and temp gauge not getting to quarter, changed thermostat and now it going rite up by the red into little black bit just before? My top rad pipe thst goes to stat is hot and bottom pipe stone cold, any ideas please?? ;-(
 
Disco 1 i guess is it ok to drive then? y bottom rad pipe cold if top hot and water runs top to bottom? Im guessing water goes that way?
 
If your radiator is doing it's job you should expect hot at the top and cool at the bottom.
 
Half hr last nite an gauge was middle, drove ten mins today and temp near thee red,top hose hotbottom very cold m8
 
Do you have a viscous fan? It might be that in this cold weather the engine is being overcooled and thus the thermostat isn't opening fully, in order to keep the engine close to operating temperature. The Tdi is a very cool running engine and the cooling system is designed to cope with extremely hot climates.
 
Also it might be worth checking you've not got a blockage or an air lock in the radiator or pipes.
 
Or, if you have the correct temperature sender, you could have been sold a sticky thermostat. I tested three AllMakes4x4 thermostats a few months back, and not one of them opened at 83 degrees. I then used a gas axe to heat a paint tin full of water (well above boiling) and not one of the thermostats opened - a sure way to cook your engine. I'd suggest that you take the thermostat back out, clean it up and then lower it into a boiling kettle on a length of copper wire. Just as the kettle clicks off, remove the thermostat and see whether or not it has opened. If it hasn't, you've got a dud. You could try opening and closing the thermostat manually by pulling against the springs and then try it in the kettle again to see if it opens up. Sometimes they need a hell of a lot of heat (above the stamped temperature) or some manual force to free them up if they haven't been used. I've always found that to be the case anyway.

Remember if the water is in an open container it can't get it hotter than 100°C.

Anyway, Pos is spot on with the stats, you really need to get a gen LR stat, I have found others to be rubbish. I had 2 brand new stats different brands, also looked different so I believe they were probably different makes too that opened very late.

Another thing to consider is where you mounted the jiggle pin, it should be at the 12:00 position, so when the air hits it, it cna pass through and allow hot water to submerge the wax capsule. Also, I always pull the ball or pin out, this means there is always a flow of water past the wax capsule which keeps the temp up, it also saves the radiator from flash freezing in cold weather driving.
 
Better off changing the gauge than the sensor. The sensor is made for that engine. Get one off Fleabay.
