Hi, I've been a quiet member for a little while, whilst putting up with my freelander.
I have now had the green light from SWMBO to finally get the defender I've been after for ages!
I'd love a 110 station wagon but only have a budget of around 7k, should I go for a 200tdi or a 300???
Is one much better than the other?
Any replies much appreciated! ( and I'm prepared for the stick I know I deserve for the freelander!)

7k should be more than enough to get a good 300tdi 110. bad time to buy though, wait a good few months for the winter madness to go

Yeah I know my timings poor but really want one! Maybe I'll get a bit of a better offer for my freelander too, I live in hope!

300 is slightly more refined, little bit of electrics compared to 200 but still simple! Would be looking for good bodywork and chassis (galv'd if you're lucky). Agree that £7k is easily enough for a decent 200/300 110 CSW.

300 has a better gear box and axles /brakes etc and the one id go for if there was a choice on equal condition of 2

Well I've driven military wolfs with 300tdis, and they seemed slower if anything than my 1992 200tdi 110sw. If there is much difference between the 200 and 300tdi in defenders, it's just the 300 is a bit more powerful, and the 200 slightly less power, and a bit better on fuel (supposedly).

That said, both of the 300tdi discoverys I had seemed much less sluggish than my 200tdi defender. I would think thats got more to do with gearing and the differences between the disco and defender versions so not exactly like comparing apples with apples.

300tdi has more elec components, but these still amount to f-all in comparison with td5 onwards so nothing really to worry about.

As far as tdi defender's go, I'd go with a 300tdi on the basis that they are a tad more refined, and on the logic that second hand parts and the landy itself when you buy it will be younger than 200tdi, and therefore better condition (Not always the case).

A looked after cracking condition 200tdi, is obviously going to be better than a ropey 300tdi.

Shop with a slight bias to 300tdi's but if you search along the lines of buying based on condition, and to some extent mileage, rather than age or spec, then you won't go far wrong.

200 & 300 share the same performance figures so it is purely down to the condition of the engine. Logic says that a 300TDi is going to be newer, therefore lower mileage and therefor better condition but that isn't always the case so as with anything, check carefully.
Not all 300TDi's have electronics so don't let that even be of a concern. Bought mine new in 2004 (and they were still being manufactured for a few years after that) and being ROTW spec it doesn't even have an EGR valve.
I would forget holding out for a specific type of engine, at the sort of money / age you are looking at you are better looking for the best available rather than discounting an otherwise excellent vehicle just because someone said another engine was better.

Don't apologise for the Freelander.
I have been a LR owner for 30-years but it was only about 4-years ago that my wife decided to get a Freelander and it has been excellent. Performance in the snow is faultless (important when you have a hard winter and you live on top of a hill) and she says it is the first vehicle she has felt really at home in.

i'm trying to convince my other half to get a fl, well.. i tried for a p38 or disco first but she's having none of it.. too big

Yup most woman hate it...

300tdi parts easier to get hold of.. I know because i have a 200tdi..

Military slower than others you have drove id guess is a weight issue, as well as driving a disco compared to a defender..

I have a 200tdi defender plenty of power, easy to work on, annoying things like the belts...

i have a 300tdi disco, slower but feels nicer to drive, easy to work on again, parts cheaper
