I took my rear prop assembly off to eliminate it whilst searching for the source of my vibration. The car drove soo much better for being 2wd I left it off!
I live in the sarf east so rarely get snow or icy conditions, but if we did I'm half hour and 12 bolts away from being 4wd again!
Its a very easy job to remove the rear prop assembly but you must keep it supported whilst doing it. It heavy and you dont want the weight of it pulling on one end or another.

well i spent the whole of the last two days helping me mate reinstall the 4 post lift in his new garage so I think I might avail meself of its services in th eNew Year to whip mine off - the rear prop that is. You say its just a matter of supporting it while you take it off?

Yup, very easy job, On a ramp probably only take you 15 minutes. You need to support it as the complete assembly is fairly heavy and you wouldn't want that weight hanging off of one of the UJs, if you see what i mean. I undid each end and then the centre mount and lowered it down on a jack.
Unless you need a 4x4 capacity reguarly you probably wont be in a hurry to refit it either. The car drives so much better being 2wd. Such a shame its not an electronically selected 4wd system. I'm paranoid about parking mine on grass verges now though, in case it sinks and I'm pnly 2wd. Imagine the stick you'd get from being bogged down and towed out by an escort or suchlike!

I agree with Taipan - electronic (even manual) 2wd/4wd selection would be a godsend. - It is being investigated down under.

I'm still in 2wd. My FL feels lighter on the steering............ Fuel consumption seems a bit better. (2ltr Diesel).
I do want to put the prop back on again once I get the new part for it.........just incase I have an accident, don't want my insurance to be invalidated!

Yep she's still going, I haven't driven her much over the hols, just to the stables n back really. Longest journey was in to work today.
I spoke to one of the guys at my stables, he works for a garage, he said he should be able to change the timing belt n the other one............so I may get it done cheaper than £300+!! Mind you he's only a kid (early 20's I think) So whether I trust him enough to let him touch her is another story.
Did you have a good xmas etc?

Yes thanks had a great festive season. Even put the prop back on with expectation of the snow. It only takes about 20min to place back on the FL.
Dont worry if he is early 20's chances are he has served his apprenticeship. £300 sounds good
My main LR dealer now charge £75 an hr labour and it will be some 16 yr old just out of school doing the work. Hence, I dont use them anymore they are bandits
