doing my timing belt. when i got to taking the old one off all the marks were not lined up together. i cranked by hand but at no point would they line up together if one was lined up the others would be out a few degrees. the engine was running fine before. i left as was regards markings and put it back together. now it wont start. should i take it all off and move everything so the marks are all lined up together or should i do something else is the question
cheers

how ever it was before doesnt matter you do need to set it with all marks aligned ,pump can then be fine tuned by slackening nuts and removing plug on side and using plunger or by eye aligning slot in disc in pump with hole, after setting belt tension turn engine over twices asnd retension

thanks for the quick reply. done as you said turned it over a few times by hand and the dots are now out of line like they were when i first opened the cover. i take this is its normal thing then so should i just leave this now and give adjuct pump as advised
cheers

we are talking about timing belt ?as dots should realing after 2 turns ,timing gears wont realign as made with odd teeth numbers so gears dont wear

sorry dots and arrows do line up after a couple of turns thanks. so is it the nuts that hold the pump on and then turn it to line up
cheers

if its 2.5 and not tdi ,only do it when all marks are aligned and injector pipes undone, you can see slot in the disc through pin hole on side of pump

great. is this pin hole the one thats a nut with a torque screw thing above and below do i just take the nut out and look through there (or feel) the screws aren't coming out in a hurry i know that much
thanks for the advice

it still wont start.... got everything lined up did two turns re adjusted did two turns all lined up. checked the pump timing and could feel the notch in the wheel when all dots lined up but it still wont start turns over but not a hint of firing. its been about 15 years since i last did one of these i dont recall these problems its getting emotional

are you using pin in fly wheel housing for crank ,key way at front should be 108 degrees before tdc or approx 8 oclock

i shouldnt think so i'd have to look i've been turning by hand several times to make sure nothing catches before trying to start batteries flat now so i can check and bleed again whilst that charges up

just trying to think why it should run reasonable before when timing was out ,pulleys are all on keys and i cant think that they are prone for shearing and letting pulleys move abit without moving all the time, though strange things can happen, worth removing injector pipes at pump and watching to see if each squirts good jet of fuel as is cranked

push rods all ok just had them out now.cant get the pipes disconnected at pump just now they are well stuck on but fuel is coming through as i disconnected at injector and observed fuel. i suppose i should just take it all apart and start again but i'm sure everthing was lined up

did the timing belt again used a small drill bit to line up the pump. it lines up with the f mark?? it started after a bit of effort (it's not the best on a cold day at best of times) and revved up but couldn't leave it on as i had not put the water pump back on and that screw on the pump. put it all together but battery a bit flat after first start so charging battery and fingures crossed for 2mrw
