Hi Guys,

Boydy - opposite problem! engine appears to crank to fast, as if reduced compression.

Disco - definately torqued correctly. Vapour could come from the inside of the water gallerys of the cyclinder head, condensation heated by the glow plugs??

Will try the oil trick and report back tonight.

Regarding the petrol engine tester - you will probably get away with it, at 300psi reckon its high enough.

The compression ratio will be about 18 : 1, so 18 x 14.7 psi = about 270 psi.

Compression ratio may be a little higher, as much as 22 : 1 .... = about 330 psi, but its not a new engine either.

If you still think you need one - I would give it a go, and I think its probably worth it.

Hi Boydy and Disco,

Tried the squirt of oil in each of the pots no change! I had the engine fire twice, (by fire i mean fire of one pot, this hasent happened before!).

I have a compression tester from my mini days. I will make an adapter at work to convert it to fit the glow plug threads. Don't suppose that any one knows the thread size and type off the top of their heads? (my guess M12 fine pitch:confused: ).

To add weight to the low compression theory, I cranked the engine whilst the plugs were removed, I got diesel mist from all pots, however the smell of this mist was similar to that of the smoke that was coming from the thermostat hole:( :( :(

On a plus note I changed the timing belt on my disco. It still runs so i guess in not that mechanically challanged;)

All though it does seem to have the classic 300TDI belt issue, so it will be another thread on the disco forum!

dont furget that doozils have a much higher compression ratio - it might blow your mini compression tester over the roof of ya neighbours.

If the smell was the same from the thermostat housing then thats vapoursed diesel - a sweet sort of smell.

You say it fired twice - was that after you sqirted the oil in it? That would probably be the thick oil increasing the compression slightly - helping to block up a valve thats not seating properly or a dodgy piston ring.

or a poorly head gasket. If it was running until the belt broke and you removed the head, then sounds like it is something to do with that. See what a compresion test shows up.

Hi Guys, have another head thanks to porthos! will clean up and try. must admit that the valves on the old head look ropey. tryed compression tester for petrol engines, no use thought pressures off the scale. Report back soon!

Well then you know you have 300PSI plus which will be fine because you only need 308PSI (just checked it in my diesel engine book) in this engine - I don't think you should bother taking your head off.

Hi guys me beasty is running again. Timing on closer inspection was slightly out (injection pump slightly retarded). corrected this and it starts better than ever! thanks for your help. Especially Porthos0
