Hello all,

My 110 is been spitting out oil from the filler cap for a while now and i think it's time to fix it, cause i'm tired of clean it all the time. I've used the search and found this topic:

I tried making the rubber a little bigger by adding another o ring to it, but that didn't really help much, dealer told my they always leak there cause the hole deforms a bit over time, however, mine spits out a lot. I also tried Pos his put your finger on the oil check pipe, but mine doesn't spit out oil or even puffffs, when running idle.

Before i assume the worst i'll try and replace the filler cap, the hoses and the breather cyclone thing, but my on my military version it looks a little different. Maybe you guys can help me point out what is what.

You can see the oil mess. It keep running down the back side of the cap and i cleaned it a little bit when i added some oil yesterday

The filler cap is number ERR1454 (or 737 depending on my model number)
The Breather cyclone is ERR1471, but what i have now is different from what i have on the engine, see picture. Do you guys know why this is different, is it better or worse?
 
I think the breather got updated in the late 80's. Maybe it's that?

Does the engine 'blow' of 'chuff' out the filler hole of you take the cap off whilst it's running?

First instance I would suggest a new cap

depends ,could have had poor rebuild ,a lot of mod recon units were poorly done ,blocks are prone to bore and ring wear , but chuffing is combustion passing in to crank case ,could be quite a few things from head gasket to valve or valves not opening ,to knackered, id check valves and tappets then move onto head gasket , at that point condition of bores will be obvious
 
hmmm, right. looks like i'll be busy again. Stilll have a Guzzi crankshaft seal and a BSA rebuild to do as well :p

yeah but thats just road miles, doesnt actually tell you how many hours the engine has been run for, could have been idling for ever.......

usually low miler MOD vehicles have sat in fields barely moving with the engine running at a fast tick-over for hours and hours to keep radio batteries charged/troops warm. This results in lots of engine wear, but not a lot of wear anywhere else (chassis, axles etc)

I can see a 24v alternator bracket on your so its an ex-FFR truck so thats even more likely.

Its exactly that reason i chose a 12v non-radio truck with medium mileage lol

will take some investigations, hopefully its an easy gasket/seal fix

yeah it used to be a radio car. Didn't have that many issues yet. Replaced the transfer box (ran out of oil) and rear prop shaft as that was worn.

let's say i give it to the dealer to look at, what will that set me back you think?
 
too much lr dealer would be extortionate ,look your self ,or find someone who really knows their stuff ,info is all available if you ask

bloody loads, it would be extortionate and they would prob not know what to do as it doesnt have a computer.....

If you dont want to do it yourself then i would take it to a local garage, doesnt have to be specifically a 4x4 garage as you arent asking them anything to do with the 4x4 system. the 2.5na rover engine was used in other vehicles so will be known about, it would just be a nuts and bolts job.

you can take it to a few places for quotes though as it is still driving. Then decide what to do. If the engine is worn out and needs an overhaul then it may be cheaper to either source another 2.5na engine (maybe from a damaged/rusted out wreck at withams or somewhere then you can hear it running) and fit that or fit a 200/300tdi lump.
 
I bought it from a dealer that only does these land rovers (and older), he used to wrench on these in the army, so he knows what he's doing, i hope :p

But yeah, i don't mind doing it my self, just gotta find a place to do so, don't have a garage and don't want to do this on the street.
 
cool they would be a good place to start, get their opinion. you dont have to use them to do the work though
 
I had very same symptons on 2.5 NA diesel was head gasket failed , quite simple fix ran great afterwards.
 
If it's weeping through the oil filler cap housing, a new rubber seal is available for a couple of quid without having to replace the whole cap.
 
My Landy is different, it always has had 1 pipe going from the manifold straight to the filler cap, so it doesn't have a breather fitted.
