How, what , where, does the oil filter system work on a 2.25 engine?

Big metal can on the drivers side at the back near the bottom. Has a non cartridge filter in it. Take the bolt off the bottom, remove the can, drain the sleeveful of oil from your arm, replace filter, dig out old rubber seal, put a new one in, tighten up bolt, sorted.

Good stuff ,thank you, thats what I hoped.
I can remember reading an oil filter housing from a 2.3 or a 2.5 90/110 fits and enables a screw on filter to be used, but it was half a lifetime ago so I'm not sure. Is this the case?

Later spin on filter is the way to go. Makes life so much easier and filters are on offer at times 5 for 10/12£

So will the later housings fit?

Im breaking a 19j engine you see and thought if it fits it might be of some use to some of you series guys.

Make me a sensible offer and its yours, bearing in mind it has flow and return ports for an oil cooler, it has a thermostat that opens when the oil is hot and sends the flow to the cooler, it also has ports for an oil pressure switch and one for an oil temperature or an oil pressure transmitter.

Some pics. The big nut is a blank for the oil temp transmitter. The part number is ETC4348 superceded by ERR1347.

Itried to get a photo of one on a working engine but its pretty buried down in there.

I probably have the unions for the oil cooler pipes, I'll have to check tomorrow as its dark in the shed where I store all my boxes of bits.

I really can't see why people would go for a spin on filter - I hate them. They're always a right pain in the arse to get off, ok the old style is a bit messy but a lot less wasteful...

pretty sure all the 2.5's can be used, so n/a, 200tdi/300tdi, etc

might need a blanking plate and shorter bolts.
