Well, I love my noisy 2.4 - and it gets the green light (or sticker) for emission controls all over Germany (thank God)
:)

Just checked and since January 2011, in Germany, Euro 5 has been a requirement for all new vehicles (bought my Deffy in April). The difference in road tax here for a new 2.2 engine (reduction by 200ccm and 29g CO2) will only be 58 Euros a year - I can live with that, especially since my insurance is well over 1000 pounds!!! (has to be insured as a "commercial vehicle"...)

That's a good point you raise.

Euro 5 has been a requirement here since the 1st of January, yet the Land Rover UK website still quotes the Defender as having the old 2.4 engine with Euro 4.

I know that the January 1st cut off refers to date of manufacture, rather than date of sale; old stock and unregistered versions of the other car that I drive are still available new (with a Euro 4 motor) for this reason. However, why would they still be building them?

And, going back to my original question, which engine is it?

Mine has the Transit/Puma 2.4L - emission is 295g
The 1st January cutoff in Germany is for the first registration i.e. mine was in April and therefore would be Euro 5...but ... as Deffys are considered "delivery vans" here (and since 1st January you can't get it changed!!!) they are commercial vehicles and exempt for a few years. My Puma engine is Euro 4 (I actually checked the reg. docs and websites properly
