Hi all. My engine is a little knackered...I'm looking for a very good standard engine, west midlands or close... I could rebuild mine, but a standard exchange would be great... Anything? Anyone? Cheers Terry.

What's up with your engine?

It would be a gamble to buy an unknown 2.25d. I'm wary that many claim they've been rebuilt but you don't know how much or how well it's been done. To avoid a gamble, I think there are 3 options:

1. Rebuild yourself, assuming you're comfortable doing this.
2. Pay a known reputable engine builder / garage to do it for you
3. Dig deep and buy a reconditioned engine from Turner Engineering

It was really smoky, I took the head off as it was suggested that the head gasket had gone. I sat the valves, changed valve stem seals, and it is much better, but lots of heavy breathing and still a bit smoky..More than acceptable.

Only driven about ten miles, made a few noises, power went flat and now us sounds like a VW beetle... I'm going to check valve gaps, push rods...If that's fine it may be a bent valve, plus it needs rings..

So it's decision time...

I think you've answered your own question there. Possible head damage, drop the sump, pull out the pistons, change the rings, hone the bores, new big end shells, etc., etc. All with no guarantee?
Is it really worth it?
Turners.

Its worth it if you dont want to part with nearly three grand for a wash and polish.

Not sure how you can qualify that kind of money for a rebore and paint.
