Fill it in small amounts, half pint or so until it registers on stick, then top up to correct level. Difference between high and low on stick is less than a pint. Only check it with oil cold.
Yes...the dipstick does not reach into the sump, it sits inside the tube so the difference between high and low is, as Wammers said, slight. Give the oil time to drain from the inside of the tube before dipping.
