Hi all,

Just in the process of finishing a 200tdi conversion in my 1989 110 CSW.

I have just come to reconnect the wiring on the starter motor, and have found that in that area, I have a number of wires.

I have one thick red wire (direct from the battery) which connects to the top stud on the starter solenoid. I have one small white/red wire with a spade terminal which is the ignition controlled 12v power supply to the solenoid.

As well as these, I have 2 pairs of brown wires. Each wire in the pair is connected together on a ring terminal, which gives me 2 ring terminals, with 4 brown wires. These terminate in the area of the starter motor, but Im not sure where they go?

Unfortunately, I tried to put the two ring terminals and the battery cable on the top stud, and when I tried to start the engine, there was a lot of smoke.

Im not quite sure what to do now?

Any suggestions?
Many thanks
Tom

the brown wires should secure with battery cable on solenoid ,they are feeds for car and alt ,you must have a short somewhere ,are they trapped around the rear of engine ,alt wires ok

To the alternator, I have fed two thick brown wires to one terminal, and the smaller wire to the smaller terminal.

Need to check the rear of the engine in that case..

Think there may have been a small amount of flames too, I took the connections off the battry and the starter motor and left it for the night.

If I had a short at the rear of the engine, then why is the smoke at the starter motor terminal?

Thanks a lot James

the part with greatest resistance would get hot first, are the wires shorting at solenoid ,on alt brown permanent (thick wires)lives to b+, ignition live d+

How would I know if the wires are shorting at solenoid?

Does that mean that the two thick brown wires to the altenator should not be on the same terminal?

Thanks again!
