Just wondering if anyone can enlighten me on this problem,,My 87 landrover 90 sometimes wont go into reverse,,after letting the clutch out and in a few times it goes in fine with the occasional grinding but nothing to bad.some days its fine others it isnt,,,Its done this ever since Ive owned it and im not too concerned but if its fixable id happily give it a go....your help is much appreciated

Thanks in advance

(all other gears are fine,,,no grinding throughout 1-5 and back over)

Sounds like your clutch is dragging a little, if you bounce it off 1st or 2nd before you go into reverse it shouldn't make the crunch noise.

If you do a search on here I would find another reply I made which goes into much more detail.

Could also have no or the wrong type of oil in the gearbox. It needs ATF, not Dextron I think. I changed mine and it made all gears select so much easier and smoother.

Just purchased oil for diffs/engine/gear box/transfer box so will change that and see how I get on,,,,when selecting reverse it basically feels like its not there,,it doesnt grind at that point (if that makes sense?)double/triple clutching before going into reverse and everything fine but it never selects on the first attempt??A couple of months back I changed the clutch slave and the clutch master cylinder ,,at first i assumed there was sum air still in there but surely this would effect more than just reverse???thanks for the suggestions

I'm just about to rebuild an LT77 (for the first time).

If I can see a reason that reverse might be 'missing' I'll let you know.

Can't think that it's clutch connected, if all the forward gears engage easily. Would also be surprised if it's anything to do with the external gearbox parts (lever and lever to selector mechanism).

I'd certainly go along with the 'change the oil' brigade. But, before you do, drain a little (100ml) old stuff out, top up with petrol and go for a very gentle 10 mile drive. This will dissolve any greasy bits, so that when you drain it you've got all the nasty stuff out.

If you have any dead hard drives from old pcs, take them apart, use the discs as shaving mirrors and the crescent shaped rare earth magnets should be 'attached' to gearbox drain plugs prior to an oils change - be careful with them, if you get a body part between two of them IT WILL HURT. They are about a gazillion times more powerful than the poxy little things car makers fit into the tips of their drain plugs.

Thinking about it, there is an explanation for it, and the behaviour. Reverse gear has no synchromesh at all, so if the gears are not spinning, or stop spinning very quickly, due to no oil or the wrong type etc, then they may not engage 'cos as you try to select them the teeth are kinda on top of each other, if you see what i mean. In which case, spinning them up again by declutching and trying again would work. Does it make it easier to engage if you pick the revs up a little before you depress the clutch? Not too much though or lots of grinding will ensue.

I like that magnet idea also, im gonna try that for the next oil change!

Yes if I rev slightly before double clutching it seems to go in quite smooth...Ive got all the oil so will change that hopefully tomorow afternoon and post up my findings.Im guessing the oil is about due a change as when pretty cold the gearbox feels slightly notchy...so to speak,,no problem once shes warmed up...thanks for all your input much appreciated

:) thanks for the advice

Yes, the magnets work. When I took the drain plug out before removing the tx box (and this following an oil change 200 miles prior) there was a cone with a base the size of the plug and about 30mm high. Should have taken a picture. Funny? Well no, not if the cone of swarf is going to cost hours and cash......
