Hi all I have a defender 90 on an '85 plate, as its not fitted with a cig lighter socket, I want to fit a 12v socket so I can charge my phone, can I just use the wiring from my rear wiper button? (no wipers fitted but not sure it would work) or is there another easy way of doing it, bearing in mind I'm crap at working out wiring unless it's colour coded exactly! Lol
Thanks

Mandy

If its just to charge a phone then take a fused live from the ignition. If you are going to use it for different things that may draw more amps then take a fused feed from the battery. You could put a relay on it so that it becomes live only with the ignition.

There are unused switched and permanent life wires in the dash where rear wipe goes, just test with a bulb to find the one you need.

Plus 1 to that. Also means you have ignition live set up if you want top it a stereo in. Assuming you don't have one

stereo fitted and a cb (thats stopped working though along with my roof bar spots), but as im totally not au feit with auto wiring not sure which the live feed would be, yes only wanting it to charge a phone for the time being, but I do have a small inverter that works off a 12v socket, may want to use that in the future, I have noticed a few wires hanging around doing nothing in the dash, some even have bullett connectors fitted to them

As has been said.

Do not splice off anything if your going to use the inverter. Inverters pull alot of amps so you dont want to blow a fuse or fry any wiring for anything else.

Take a live feed from the battery instead and put a 20A fuse on it.

Fused ign live should be solid purple wire.

Do you have any spare fuses?

Don't like to contradict ginger beard, but 10 amp is more appropirate, as the sockets themselves are usually rated at around 16 amp.

Also, coming off the battery will mean its perminent on.

There should be a couple of blanked off wires in the dash, one of which should be a switched purple live.

Cheers guys for the help I do have a spare purple wire I believe, am I right in thinking I should use the purple one n a black wire? If I use the invertor I may just get a separate battery (got one knocking round in my shed somewhere) one of the invertors I have actually has a 12v connector on it so assuming that ones not very strong ?

As far as I can see got no spare fuses other than those rolling round in my dash lok

I have no idea why i said 20A! must have been thinking about summit else.

I should have said the correct rating for what you want to power.

Cheers mundungus ;)

I have no spare fuses there's even extra ones been added for my roof spots, so if I have a a spare purple wire what other wire do I need for the other connector on the 12v socket looking at pics of em on fleabay they have a black wire n red wire coming off them? Ta

if your not sure on wiring do what i do pay a auto electrician to do the job correctly better safe that sorry :D

I'm gonna cheat for the time being and get one that runs straight off the battery with gattor connections and only use it when the landy is on a run, just need to power my phone as I use it as my speedo, its just for a run to peterborough, will test it before hand to make sure it's not gonna set anything on fire and see if the actual socket is fused

I used my phone the other day as a speedo, and the dash speedo said i was doing 14mph faster than the phone said! And i thought everyone overtaking me were speeding!
