Hi all,

I'm wanting to get a 3.5 v8 landrover started! Yes, as simple as that :D Ok, once I get my battery charger back here I can really give it a go. Starter motor comes on fine and whirls quite the thing. Fuel pump ticks nicely. No wires dropped out of the coil (just the 3 wires in?!), Has Petrol though it can take LPG as well, sparks ok from all 8 plugs.

Just doesn't actually "catch" and fire up as it were :(

It has been standing for a year. Last time it was running during that time was when it was towed and it did run (roughly, maybe on 4 cylinders only?) and then died)

Any suggestions as to what might be the next course of action?

Have to say I'm more used to Series 2's not these high tech 110's!

:) Thanks, who knows the man himself might take a look in at this thread...

I'm just suprised that there's not more V8 owners out there - I mean I'm only on the extremely basic checks as well for someone completely clueless about them :(

I've got one in a lightweight but it's poorly just need to time to swap it with another
 
Arrgh - always seem to have at least a couple of dead land rovers around the place :D. Was working fine before being taken off the road, that's the annoying thing...

Yeah, if only time could be put aside for these things!

Cheers Brad - drop me in the sh-te wont you ! If this V8 ran badly a year ago then I'm not suprised it wont go now.It needs fresh petrol,new spark plugs,(and leads,cap and rotor - genuine ones) and plenty of battery and it should go.
Dont make the mistake of continually trying to crank it if it wont fire.Rover V8's wet their plugs very easily and can be an absloute cow to start,so if this is the case take em all out,crank it over for a few secs then leave it overnight to dry out.

Some things to go on, will take me a bit of time to find suppliers but should be worth it.

Nah mate she thinks yer lovely, no worries got to MOT it when it's going. Got to weld his other motor as well cause his MOT's out on that un as well. Give us ring when yer done cheers mate

Had three V8's in Rangerovers and a 1958 series 1 hybrid. Superb. Trouble with starting. I had a fat spark. But found the Dizzy cap was tracking inside. also three plugs were failing under compression. Also when its dark crank it over and take a look under the bonnet to see if you can see any stray sparks from any of the leads. Sounds electrical. but dont rule out the jets in the carbs either.

When it went in the hybrid it was awsome. Regret the day I sold it see the picture after resto { well would have done if I could figure out how to!}

I had a look inside the Dis. Cap today and I think the contacts are pretty filthy with some sort of buildup of grey stuff. Starter motor sort of starts, turns engine over but sometimes stops = possibly the lack of battery power. I doubt if the spark plugs are in great shape either so looks like 8 new ones whereas the leads are new. Didn't think of checking in the dark for stray sparks so thanks for the tip ;)

As well as that, the battery dosen't look to be in fantastic shape either.... that's what happens from neglect!

Still, back to more familiar ground working on the IIa radiator panel just now having given up for a couple of days on the bulkhead!

Glad to be of some use. I remember more or less making most of the steel parts for the 86 inch series 1. As most of it had rusted away. if you see her about she was 755 FUV. Should have kept her.

Trust me, at this rate about 75% of the vehicle is new as I keep on replacing bits that I reckon might go wrong - I need to stop sometime soon as I'll be brought to a sudden stop because of lack of £ :D

I just wish you were a lot closer because that bulkhead needs a power more work before the galvanisers!
 
Make sure the battery is charged and holds it. Is the cap dry and clean? Are the points clean and gapped correctly? Change the plugs? Try that and if not take out all the plugs and earth them to the block and see if you have a spark on all cylinders. If this is good fresh fuel and it should be good to go. I Guess compression is good?
