my 90 was 2400 first year, but got mates with different 90's that were 1600 and 800 to insure but some were on light vehicle insurance rather than car insurace
 
but mine had a 200 tdi conversion and county conversion and colour change which all increased the premium

No a 90 will be more as it's more desirable because a lot of people see them as a fashion accessory due to the character and heritage of the vehicle. Hence it drives up the price as more people want to get their hands on them.


Put is this way, I'm 20 next month and I've been driving a discovery for the last 2 years (300 tdi's) now the first policy I was on was with my parents with NFU and that cost about £750 FC on my own disco I'm £1280 FC (1yr NCB) and on a multi car quote.

However that was taken out earlier in the year when I was younger and now that I'm coming up for 20 I have been quoted just under £900 for a 109 V8 pickup, why do I want such a truck ?
I shoot and I dont want blood on my lovely tan leather disco seats, plus the V8 has that extra power for getting through muddy fields and forrest tracks, its also a 109 so I don't give a **** if I scratch it.
But with this I am on a limited mileage policy 2000 a year and I have access to a second car. Oh and I live in a safe area with secure parking.


If you think you're going to get a 110, which is a group 11 if memory serves me correctly and in a V8 which bumps it up again you'll be looking at the same as I was quoted before moving onto a multi car policy (£4800) plus you'll be a new driver without any extra qualifications like I have and with no NCB

Now as to why you want a V8 I have no idea, maybe you just like the sound or maybe you just dont want to be like every other 17 year old in a **** box corsa or saxo. It's probably more of an ego thing isn't it ? wanting to be the one at school with the loud powerful car to make your friends jealous ? try and pull etc ?

yer i had a disco befor but i saw that the 110 was cheaper on insurance and lower group,and just thought uno ill have one of them,and then became to like them more ,and then saw a v8 and then wanted one,but i think im being abit mad wanting one
 
200tdi and tune it, get close to the performance of a v8 i would have thought 110's would be more expencive but ive never got a quote on one so wouldnt know.
 
iv always liked the v8's my dad has had v8 rangies and landies over the years ,but i just like one,and it aint to show off or that i have a big ego, but i just wanted one becuse i like the motors,and iv always wanted one,but i do understand now that it is going to be silly trying to insure a 110 no matter what engine it has in it

Wrong. See my earlier post (if you're not blind from ****ing). A 110 or a 90 can be insured, on a classic policy. Or you could buy drugs.
 
so the fact its a v8 might not make that much difference then ,as if i had one it would not have any mods ,or anything,would have a steering lock fitted ,meshed windows,tracking system,and parked on the drive,would this bring insurance down ?

Noooooo a lot of classic car insurers wont insure until you hit 20 - 25

I've tried this before as I wanted an old lightweight originally, a lot of the time as well you will have to be the main drier on the policy as insurers have wizened up and know that if you're a young driver on a vehicle with a large engine you're probably going to be the main driver but are just trying to get cheap insurance so they still bump the price up a bit

Actually sometimes trackers can up the insurance, dont know why but I tried this when messing about with quotes and putting it on with some companies (depending on car age) actually raised the price

yeah i found that you cant use most of the specalist insureres until your 21/25 so not much use for a 17 year old but the NFU are usually good if your parents have a policy with them
 
when i was looking about, engine made minimal difference.. think it was 30 quid a year... and 90 was about 300 cheaper.. god knows why! but it was.. but i got a 110 anyway!
 
tom can you give me some sort of clue as to where you are? It is just that a 17 year old with no driving experience behind the wheel of 2 and a bit tons of Land Rover is not something want to be anywhere near.:eek:

Tom, you should make some phone calls. I`m assuming you want to insure in your own name as main driver and that you want to insure a "standard" 110 CSW V8 with a value for arguments sake of 4 grand.
The insurance will be loaded for 1) your age; 2) your sex; 3) your location; 4) security when parked; 5) lack of ncb; 6)driving record; 7) whether used for SDP only, to and from work, or business; 8) the model of the car, its engine size, number of seats, and any security precautions (remember we`re assuming its "standard".
You can reduce the loading by a mileage restriction and a voluntary excess but I`d guess you`ll be looking at a very chunky compulsory excess anyway.
You should phone a) any commodity insurer - e.g Direct Line, Churchill , Admiral, More Than - I would guess some will decline to quote and the others will be expensive; b) a specialist broker, ideally for 4x4`s and classics - e.g Footman James , Adrian Flux, Sureterm, Frank Pickles - I would guess most will have a problem with your age but worth a go (some of these policies don`t build up ncb,always check; c) a specialist insurer used to insuring young people in cars like LandRovers - like the NFU, though my premium with them went up 70% this year; d) a young person`s insurer like Endsleigh.
My gut feel is that your age, lack of driving experience , location and proposed car will make you either very expensive to insure or uninsurable but its got to be worth a couple of hours on the phone to find out. Remember to ask in each case which are the biggest factors which load the premium - then you might be able to refine your approach.also ask around your mates and see who they insure with, it seems to go in cycles.
Finally don`t forget to think laterally - could you persuade your Dad to do a multi-car policy, say with Admiral ? Are there any Owners Club memberships that come with good or discounted insurance deals ?
