Agreed, a nice clean or painted chassis which is kept that way is better in my eyes, the underseal/wax oil just ruined every part on mine and made a simple job a nitemare and rotted anyway, waste of time and looks dreadful, also quite flammable if your welding
Whatever your preferred coating, paint, underseal, waxoyl or whatever, it may make the situation worse if there is any rust, mud or salt trapped underneath.

I had my chassis and engine bay steam cleaned before recoating the chassis with underseal. That way, all the dirt was removed and any rust could be spotted. There was a little patch on the rear crossmember that the garage welded up for me, but that was all we found which was encouraging.

If the chassis is in good nick, then undersealing or waxoiling can help it stay that way by preventing the metal from making contact with oxygen or water, but as stated above, if you just put it over the top of rust then you are asking for trouble.;)

I think whoever did mine thought by covering the rust it would stop it, don't no how many coats went on but even knackered the shocks, nearly all gone now on the chassis anyway, springs are new but look 20 years old as covered in it and dirt, body's sprayed up too hiding corrosion but that's next on my list, have new sills, looking to replace all the doors and respray.
You've done yours right, will protect it and give you many years service hopefully

I worry about the interior of the hollow box sections. Are any of these truly water- &; air-tight or is it advisable to get the waxoyl inside everywhere, and if so I imagine you cannot steam clean those first.

yep i would definitely concentrate on getting the inside of the chassis sorted, they rot from the inside out. Absolutely ZERO point putting waxoyl or whatever on the outside and nothing on the inside.

the key is keeping it clean, dont let mud sit in crevices forever retaining moisture, i know its not alwasy practical but a regular chassis jetwash goes a long way to helping maintain it. i do mine every 6 weeks regardless and inbetween everytime it gets proper muddy

Ive started doing that now too. Where the Karcher Chassis cleaner comes in handy :D

they are expensive but a worthwhile investment if you drive it as a daily and want to do it at home. mine is a play second vehicle so i just do mine at the garage with the jetwash. i get some funny looks laying down cleaning underneath then driving off without barely cleaning the body (doesnt always need it)

Had the welder in to fit engine mounts, once done engine and box went straight in, no need to touch this, just had timing belt kit, full gasket kit, top to bottom, new clutch, flywheel, fork etc etc

Turning into a bit of a pig this, thought we would have been finished by now, drivers door was scrap but has been saved thankfully, can't thank paul enough for his skills.
Windscreen rubber was perished and cracked so took the screen out to replace rubber, great idea I thought, with the cold weather and an old screen it cracked about 3 inches from getting it in so in went a new screen today, all I needed, another few days and hopefully I will be driving again, running around in my track car, a 205gti 1.9, fully track prepared and the cage doesn't help getting in and out so can't wait for the landy to be finished now.
