Whilst driving round fields last night headlights stopped working (not fuses blown) side lights work and high beam work when i flash them using indicator stalk but when i turn headlights on ALL lights go out?? Any ideas please (earth strap is ok on chassis)

Knackered headlight switch.

Remove the switch and take a close look at it and you will see the contacts have sunken into the plastic after the plastic melted

I have the same issue on my 1993 Defender 110 200 Tdi. My main beams will not come on. And when selecting high beam they don't work either. I know the bulbs work and the wiring is good since I can flash the high beams and the head lamps flash. I checked all the 7.5amp fuses and they're good. I took my voltmeter and determined that I don't have power getting to the fuses for the RH/LH Low or RH/LH high beams with or without the engine running. I confirmed that I do have power getting to fuses for the other accessories. I also confirmed that I have power to the six riveted contacts on the main beam switch. So, I have power at the switch, but not at the fuse box.

I also confirmed that previously the relay that many have mentioned on this forum was removed and replaced with basically a look alike that simply acts to connect two Blue/Red wires together. It also appears that these wires are the same wires that go to my fuse box for the high/low beams.

At this point, I really need some help. Any advice?
